Oh, wise oldfags, I have a question for all of you. What was the crypto crash of 2017 like? What are the some of the warning signs I should look for that crash 2.0 is imminent?

The crash seems obvious when looking at a chart now, but when you're in the middle of a crash, it just feels like a prolonged dip that you're waiting for to go back up because you're so used to the volatility.

Only months later do you realize it was a crash when less than 10% of your portfolio's value is remaining.

When you start seeing actual normalfags and boomers start buying BTC, then you jump ship.
I estimate this will happen at around the 100k mark.

Normies will buy in, and the volume of new buyers drives the price high.
One day, the price drops by 10% becuase it's btc lol, and every single normie panic sells, causing it to drop by about 75%.
Normies are scared away, and it'll level off interest for another few years.

We are nowhere close to a crash. This is the market coming out of the trap that we were in after the top a couple years ago. We are entering a new phase of investors - get ready because this is where things get vertical - we will be steady growing for atleast 2-3 more months. Alt season is unrironically really starting this week - many whales have started reentering the alt markets - get ready. Stock up on things like Link, AVAX, FET and others that are new platforms for services of the future.

You can't compare 2018 to 2021 for the following reasons

>$1 ETH/BTC buyers sold ages ago for the most part
>2020 showed a tremendous increase in normies using the stock market and interested in finance, which lead some of them to crypto
>coorporate "adoption" on the rise (ie: paypal has crypto, normie investment firm buy crypto, etc...)
>crypto came back from the 2017 crash, which makes holders more comfident knowing it will eventually come back no matter how hard it crashes

I was in the great XRP bull run of 2017-8. The sell sign was when it was featured on MSNBC.

Everyday, I'd tell myself, nah this is temporary - for about 80 days straight, before I had lost 80% of my gains. Still had enough to pay off my student loans though.

Overall, my advice is to reject the consensus on when to sell and when to hold. Be content with 50-80% gains, and sell, even if you lose out on a 70-150% increase, because the danger and risk of losing it all is not worth it.

There was a first crash around Christmas, IIRC. A few days of pink wojacks, but not TOO bad, then it recovered and led into a hysterical alt bullrun. Kinda like a bulltrap, but with a higher peak, at least for alts. I think it was around January 8-10 that BTC finally crashed for real, leading to an alt massacre as well.
2021 is already different in that we reached a new ATH, courtesy of Elon Musk. So I don't know what happens next. Also, back then, when BTC rallied (or when it crashed), the alts always bled heavily; no matter what. At the rally to the Musk ATH now, alts were mooning together with BTC, so there's another difference. When BTC folded this morning, though, the alts sank with it, so that would fit again and speak against a decoupling.
I don't know, anon. I'd say if you see an afternoon of pink on the board, it's time to tether up and call it a day.

I spent a week collecting BTC from faucets back in 2011, then felt like a moron for doing this tedious shit that would never amount to anything and stopped doing it.
Had I continued, I probably would have sold everything for a few thousand bucks maybe.
Every time Bitcoin peaked I thought "eh, there won't be a next time so why bother?"

This time I'm participating. This probably means I'll earn a few thousand at most and then the market will permanently crash due to changes in laws or something.
At some point BTC will have to break, as the required infrastructure is simply ludicrous arms race where every mining pool tries to waste more energy than everyone else. If this continues, we'll reach a level where Dyson Spheres will be built exclusively for blockchain upkeep.
The fact that I'm entertaining the idea that this might plausibly happen just shows how clowned up the world is at this point.

so many PTSD-riddled bears and battered bulls in here thinking this is close to the top and we have like a month left, you're all retarded.

Look to 2017 as the analog. It was in May 2017 where we first went stupid parabolic from the ~900 March 2017 low to about 3k. That's like a 4x, similar to what we just did from 10k-40k. In June we saw a 40% drawdown from 3k to 1.8k. That's the analog from 42k to 28k. Then in june/july we had the HUGE pump on the segwit lock-in that took us to new highs again. The analog here is TSLA adoption of bitcoin. It was easy to think that the 2017 run was appraoching the top at 3-4k because we were so extended from the prior peak. It went on to go to fucking 20k. You need to think bigger and have some fucking confidence in yourself, selling too early is a sign of being a low-test beta who doesn't believe deep down that you deserve such gains. Get that fucking thinking out of your head

we ARE going north of 100k this run. The long, drawn-out bear market won't begin until late '21 or sometime in '22. Look for some big bearish divergences on RSI after huge dumps and a retrace of most of the dump. We aren't anywhere fucking close yet.

You are missing a lot of key fundamentals here: Bitcoin is not going to hit 100k/200k/300k in a fucking bubble, there is going to have to be mass normie adoption at some point. Regulations are also inevitable and will ultimately be good for crypto (if uncle sam doesnt fuck it up, that is)

With a shit ton of institutional money investing now the paradigm has shifted and its hard to say at this point when the crash is. We are not following the bullrun of 2017 - which was primarily driven by retail - do not listen to any anon claiming that we are. Institutions were not buying billions of dollars of BTC in 2017, the biggest company in the world was not buying 1.5 billion of it, Microstrategy/Grayscale were not dumping hundreds of millions into it, etc.

The truth is we can make predictions but no one knows when the next crash is, least of random autists on /biz/. /biz/ was shitposting about a crash at the beginning of Jaunary when BTC doubled. Now it's almost tripled. At the risk of sounding like a jew my best advice is to bite the bullet and pay to get into one of these private investing groups and listen to people there, even then don't take their predictions as gospel but as tools in your warchest that help you make an informed decison.

Everything I'm seeing is indicating that the next bear market will be in Q4 of this year, but even then I'm not taking it as gospel. It could come earlier, it could come later. Institutions investing in this shit changes the game completely.

>> No.28315188

A lot of the signs are already here. Celebrities shilling shitcoins, dogecoin spiking, big finance media pushing stories about BTC, absolute normies discussing crypto, etc. These all happened in the final weeks of the 2017/2018 pump, before the bottom fell out. This time could be a little bit different with the institutional investment we've seen, but crypto is still dominated by retail investment, and retail investors get emotional and sell when they start seeing red candles. I think the market is absolutely primed for a big dump to happen in the coming weeks/months. It may not be as big of a dump as 2018 because of the institutional investments, but I would not be surprised if it drops 50% or more by the end of the year

Play it smart, anon. If you've been holding for longer than the past six months, start thinking about lining up your limit sells.

I'm selling around 1/4 of my position this week. I have limit sells for 1/4 of my position at 20-30% up from now. Then another 1/4 at 20-30% up from that level. The remaining 1/4 will be kept to ride it out. If it dumps tomorrow, I'll have made a nice profit. If it moons forever, I'll still have a nice stack to ride it out, and will have made a considerable profit on the 75% that I sold. Anywhere in between, and I'm very content.

A euphoric vibe and people acting like bitcoin will NEVER go down from here. The fun part is after the first major dump and the amount of cope we'll see. I love how everyone here just acts like crypto is a Ponzi scheme.

If you think there’s literally nothing legitimate here, sure why wouldn’t it eventually crash? People will want 100k more than a useless BTC.

But what if you actually think there’s value in crypto projects? Why the fuck would it crash if there’s utility? It’s like saying dot com companies are in a bubble so Amazon will crash eventually.

By the way, in 2017 there wasn’t nearly as much utility to crypto as there is today. Completely different times.

TBF OP, the crash in 2017 was sort of surreal. First of all, fucking Bitcoin Cash was putting a giant cloud on Bitcoin Core, whether it was gonna be more successful or not, then, you had that euphoria when it went up and up. Then you had the crazy phase where you had projects such as Proof Of Weak Hands that made the bear market a little bearable. But yes, one of the biggest regrets of my life was not putting that money into bitcoin when it was around 1000 in the summer of Bitcoin Cash. But I aint crying about it since /biz/ had my back and I learnt about link. this fucking thing man, I only put in 500e at the end of 2017 and during 2018 and now, im sitting on around 30k. in short, buy low, sell high. when there's blood on the street, get that money ready and buy the fuck out of coins that are blessed by kek and memes.

>> No.28319397

The market always moves in the direction of maximum pain. Fortunately for us, that is $1M bitcoin, because the majority of the pain is going to be felt in the roughly 8 billion people that were too stupid to buy bitcoin, and all the ass-blasted shitcoiners. Contrast to 2017 when it was still a niche product; the only pain to be found

We probably have a good few months left. I shilled bitcoin to an ex working girl whos in recovery. She told me that she hasn't heard of bitcoin from no one except me. She's been my sell indicator as to when the market is to hot.

Last bull run you had
>crypto nails on headline news
>soulja boy, 50cent, and other rappers shilling
>various influencers shilling
The big one
>barber is talking about it
>your boss is talking about & it doesnt know what btc is
>your co-workers is talking about it
>you see it in your instagram/snapchat feed
>middle schoolers talking about investing
>friends bragging on social media showing off their gains

The problem now is we are in a pandemic style economy. So things are in fact different. The top is hilariously anywhere between March - Feb 2022

The dxy is slated to make a rise before crashing down a bit so that should have an inverse correlation to btc. Corpations aren't selling even if theres a 75% decline because of the lag from buying to selling. So to make it short, crypto vs the gme hype - which one was bigger? If gme then we still have a ways to go before the hype rivals that of gme

It felt like the dip we just had in January, except it didn't make it back up to make a new ATH. BTC regularly has 20-40% dips during bull runs so it doesn't feel unusual, except then it's the crash.

I'd say the biggest warning sign is when the value is above the S2F peak for the cycle (so for this cycle, once price is >$100k). Once it's above the S2F fair price, the next 20-40% correction is likely the crash.
Media attention is a bad indicator nowadays; everything gets flash-in-the-pan media coverage.

I turned 1k into 15k with absolutely zero experience under my belt. You could throw a dart at any altcoin and you would've made at least 5x your money if you bought 2 or so months before the top. Shitcoins were getting talked about by normies on a daily basis. Total greed and euphoria. Nobody knew when the 'top' would be, and a lot of people were extremely delusional.

Rule of thumb: When the tabloid front pages, the mongolian basket weaving forums, the workers in the pub start recommending to buy whatever you've put your money in, you liquidate asap. Don't even think about buying more of that shit. It's toxic.

In my language we call that phase a "servant maid hausse", basically an extreme price spike driven by self-reinforcing public/media attention and fueled by greedy commoners who don't know what they're doing with money they can't afford. Sometimes that fuel source lasts only a week or two, sometimes it can go for several months, but in any case there comes the inevitable point where most of the suckers have maxed out their credit line and can no longer acquire fresh capital for new buy orders. That's where the bubble pops, general panic starts and the price starts dropping like a rock because everyone and his dog wants to sell asap. Only gamblers and retards are still in at that point. Don't be one of them.

Right now, with new zero-fee trade apps like Robinhood and lots of stimulus dollars thrown to the pigs, I expect a couple more non-linear price developments until either the money is spent or the freedom of trade is limited again. Whateever comes first.
