Absolutely there is no evidence its not and opening a short above $100 was eventually guaranteed money. I looked at the On Balance Volume for amount of volume at each price point and over $50 it was basically non existent the price was built on virtually no volume literal thin air. The short squeeze was clearly temporary to anyone with 100IQ+ because once the hedge fund closed their position there was no more mandated buying pressure. Sure they could squeeze again but as you said those people would still be in profit nearly up to $300 and it would just be retail eating retail at this point.

The owner of Porsche wanted 75% of VW. The law requiring at least 80% ownership for control of VW specifically had recently been struck down by the ECJ, so the 20% stake owned by the state of Saxony was no longer enough.
Porsche held around ~35%, but nobody knew where the rest was, until he disclosed on Saturday that he was holding calls for another ~35%, meaning twice the amount of shares that everyone thought were actually locked up. For him, it wasn't about the money either, he wanted to own VW for personal reasons.

I think there were some shenanigans on Friday as well, which caused the luckier shorters to get the fuck out, but come Monday, it was Armageddon.

So in summary:
>one guy holding for basically personal reasons, no panic-selling
>no time to prepare -> panic
>trading halts didn't matter because they weren't able to cause panics

On the other hand, even VW was much less shorted than GME (104% of total shares, I think... or the float, maybe), but who knows whether the shorters actually got out of GME, or whether they figured that they could buy some shills, demoralize people, and recoup their losses. 70B is no small sum to lose, after all, and hiring some Indians/bots to post "get out now, it's over!!!" is a lot cheaper than that.
