There's also the obvious advantage of calls and puts not getting you margin called over time. For example, some faggot (smart guy actually) shilled JWN when it was in the 12-14$ range. I leveraged my position but because I did not cover my equitity I was called after it dropped 10%. My position was wiped out in less than a week. Had I opted for calls forward 1 or 2 months I would have a shit-ton of money with the amount I was risking. Basically calls and puts let you ride those wild swings even when they go against you while short or longs (with leverage) can destroy your position really fast (depending how much leverage you playing it).

Calls and puts, the way they are applied in /biz/ (and were in wsb) is essencially leverage with limited risk over a defined period of time.
