No. You don't understanding shorting. Shortsqueezes are not the same as pump and dumps. There will be some that buy on the way up during a squeeze that get rekt when it comes down again, but it's not zero sum between the longs. All short shares covered by the shorts during a squeeze is effectively subtracted from top buying bagholdery.

Thought experiment:
Let's say there's 100 shares owned by longs. Shorts have 80% short positions. the long buy cost maximum is $30 USD when the price is pushed past the point where one big shorter gets margin called. The big shorter gets liquidated, all their funds used to buy the stonk. The squeeze starts happening and more and more of the shorters get margin called as the price goes up. 0 of the longs who got in at max $30 cost are buying on the way up, only selling a bit and a bit on the way.

Due to the demand of the shorts buying to cover, the price rockets to $600 without a single long side purchase at all.

If the only buy action happening is just shorts covering, there are no long side bagholders until the price crashes down to under $30 again post-squeeze. No "bought the top" bagholders.

I lost $50k trading GME

I shorted it too early around 125 and had to cover at 250 to stop from getting margin called. Thanks a fucking lot Elon (literally shorted it right before he tweeted some GME bullshit). If I held all the way up to 420 my account would have been blowed up. If somehow I didnt have danger of getitng margin called and held until now I would have made $100k or whatever

Anything under $46 is legitimate buy and hold value investing range for the next nine months.

My cost average is around $65 right now, but I'll just sell covered calls or buy dips for a while to bring that down closer to sub $50.

If there is some kind of future bump/squeeze type scenario I have a trigger set in place if it ever gets past $75 to set some long term trailing stops.

I made about $20K in early January when I thought $30 was the top. Then I bought back in a bit on the way up and let my ego get in the way of putting stops in place on the way back down and now I'm pivoting to a more long term view with some DCA each week on the off chance some future bump does happen, or the company itself starts making some big moves or changes going forward.
