the whole thing? in about 3 years. but it'll only have to get to phase 1.5 to render all competitors useless. realistically this will happen summer 2022 but maybe they'll manage to release it in Q1 2022 already. at that time, most people won't even be excited about this anymore, since gas fees will be reasonable once the ETH1 rollups are running.

phase 1.5 is really just a data provision layer. no sharding, and not even EVM execution on the beacon chain will be required. it's really just a data chain for rollups. i am not aware of any open research question to get to this point. i'd love to see some spec being crafted in the near future, so that the teams can start implementing in the coming months.
