Hard work isn't a meme, it's just that you need to work smart at the same time. People hear work hard and take it as "I should keep on doing what I'm doing right now, but do it more" but that's not what helps you move forward. I think better advice would be "use leverage and build leverage”.

What I mean by leverage is the amount of output you get for your input. Let's use being a farmer as an example. You have your empty plot of land, and you have no leverage at this point. If you farm on that land, you get a small harvest. If you want to get a bigger harvest, you should just go and farm that land even harder, it's not going to get you anywhere.

To build your leverage, you're going to have to plan old work hard; build your walls, make your greenhouse, plant your crops, till your soil. When you finish building your farm, you have built a lot of leverage, and you’ll get to a point where putting more glass on your greenhouse isn't going to build any more leverage. At some point you're going to just have to use your greenhouse. And when you're using your leverage, it isn't about working hard anymore, it's about working smart. You need to intelligently decide where you delegate your time and resources for the leverage you built.

People mess up by thinking they need to work harder and harder. They end up building no leverage in their life and just burn out and give up in the end. You need to figure out how you can build leverage, then work to create that system that gives you leverage, then use it. This idea should really be applied to anything you’re trying to improve at.
