So why, in my state, can I still not afford a house? Because I live in Austin, TX and the median home price has jumped something like x4 in the last 10 years. A nice 3bd 2ba home in a decent neighborhood close to my work cost around 170k in 2011, that same home is now 400-700k. So I'd essentially have to save up at least twice as much for a down payment and pay a mortgage $600 more than what I already pay in rent just for the privilege or paying out the ass in property taxes.
