When a short position is taken, TWO long positions are created.
For an hypothetical company with 1 share owned by B:

A borrows stock from B
A sells stock to C
A borrows the same share from C
A sells stock to D

The stock is now 200% shorted with B, C, and D claiming a long position, 300% ownership. To unwind this:

A buys stock from D
A returns stock to B
A buys stock from B
A returns stock to C

A single share just closed a 200% shorted position in multiple transactions.
Shorts having to buy more stock than exists was always a lie to pull people into the pump&dump. Even a few funds selling during the run-up could've closed all the short positions.

That's not the only way a short can be taken. If someone has a stock and thinks it'll go up he can buy that form any broker then another person who thinks the stock will go down can lend the share of the buyer. Then if after a day the stock falls the shorter can buy back the stock he borrowed at a lower price and the buyer can sell at the lower price or just keep holding the share. But desu usually the shorted is done without they buyers knowledge. Every retail broker has it in the small print somewhere that they can so this but most people don't read that shit. This is the most common way of shorting for retail investors to my knowledge. I've never heard of that type of shorting. What's the benefit of doing that method in comparison to this one?

If you shorted the entire float even if you could cover everything by shifting around a single share then the minimum volume for GME should be 70 millions. Yet the day shorts supposedly covered volume didn't even reach 50 millions.
