Every country on the planet that has attempted to "go green" with solar and wind has always wound up starting back up coal and oil plants again to handle the duck curve. A problem made worse the more you try to force it and the more unobtainium batteries you'll need.
The only way to really get at a solution is geothermal, hydro, nuclear, and tidal. Two of those require geography and one blessed geology. Natural gas can buy you time. Germany backdoored it by just outsourcing the green part to french reactors.
The short answer is that the grid should not have a "one size fits all" approach anyway and should be diversified and adapted to local needs same as anything else.
