Lets say to place the bet I needed to put down £10k, when I trade on margin, I might put up £1k and the broker puts down the rest of the bet.
If I'm right I pocket all the net profit. If I'm wrong I pay the broker back the full amount, not just the amount I put down initially.

There's a reason it's banned in the USA, it's the easiest way to blow up your account.

Trading with CFDs is intrinsically margin, that's just what they are. CFDs are literally banned from being used by U.S. citizens, i would just avoid them completely.
You don't have to use margin, if you can, contact your broker's customer service and ask if you have a margin enabled account. If you want, you can ask them to disable margin, but then you have to worry about T+2 rules, which means you can't use profits from a stock to buy and sell another stock for at least two days after the initial sell.
