The suicides are going to be the "feels" angle that Congress and the Senate uses to try and restrict the public's ability to trade stock in the future. You missed the part where one share of stock can cover multiple short positions.

A sells to B
B covers position by returning stock to C
C sells to D
D covers position returning stock to E
and so on.

The same lot of shares just covered multiple short positions with this transaction. Shorts NEVER had to buy all of the stock to cover.
There has been more than enough volume for all shorts to have covered and re-entered new positions at $200+ to regain their losses.
