I ordered my first 5 coins for a total of 5 oz silver. When they arrive, should I leave them in the little plastic bags or should I take them out? How should I store the coins? And I want to open one because I never touched silver in my life, i want to literally taste it, am I going to ruin it?

As for prospecting, surprisingly no where in BC hosts a prospecting course anymore, so I would suggest you look at the Youtube channels belonging to Dan Hurd and Askjeffwilliams. Both are geologists turned prospectors who have info on how to prospect in different terrains and for different resources.

1) The price is set at a derivatives market called the COMEX where the banks are over leveraged 186 to 1.
2) The end goal is to cause a default there by buying physical so that the paper price becomes meaningless.
3) Commodities are currently undervalued relative to dollars. A movement to purchase and safekeep silver would bring the price up back to its actual value and more.
4) If everybody in the US bought a 10 ounce coin, you would see a global shift in attitudes towards silver and against relying solely on paper fiat and cryptos as a wealth preserver.
5) I'd advocate for physical silver purchases, paper trading might win you some battles but physical purchases will win the war.
6) Buy locally and for as close to spot price as you can, do not spend all of your investment in one go, just keep a portfolio ratio of 5% in precious metals.

some textbooks claim it's a simple mixture while others claim mercury dissolves gold and puts it into solution

both might be true, or neither, or only one but not the other. I've never read a good definitive explanation. I do know mercury dissolves aluminum oxide and thus effectively dissolves aluminum. But I don't know if it attacks other metals similarly.

I personally believe amalgams are mixtures rather than solutions, because a mixture will be filtered by the chamois while a solution wouldn't. But I'm not sure there aren't some atomic golds lost in solution.
