to come back to my earlier comment, according to several news sources some major hedgefunds have closed their previous short positions, however, as the price hit all-time highs at $350 and $400 the short float % was still over 100%. Meaning that new short positions have been filled. Thus, to hurt the hedgefunds in a meaningful way in this moment, the price has to reach the $300+ mark again (say that the hedgefunds got new short positions at $300).

Doesn't this therefore mean that the play is over? You would hurt some hedgefunds by hovering the price around $100, but if they were smart and gotten new short positions at $300, they'll still be cashing out whilst you're losing.
