the fees are based off of the total eth you plan to spend so it will "follow" what you try to put in, but if you have .03 eth and then put a buy in for .01 you should definitely be good on fees. flick the fee thing in the small metamask confirmation window and try clicking the "Average" fee in the middle, should be a little bit lower than the auto suggested fee. might fuck the numbers enough for you to get it through

yeah dude it gets really stupid, its literally almost BTC boom tier levels of fee stupidity. gas is just transfer fees, you pay based on the current "market rate" sort of. im not 100% sure of it myself but more ETH activity atm = higher fees, its generally not worth trying to use ETH for anything less than like $75 because youre guaranteed to lose at least $25 or so of that which puts you at $50 in coins. im not sure how the fees are getting that stupid for you, i always transfer to metamask, go to uniswap and do eth to whatever coin i want, then it sends the confirmation to metamask and i modify the numbers a little and potentially change the fee to the average option. i end up with a very small amount of eth left in my wallet but it hasnt caused issues yet
