It has to do with how settlement works, ie, when you sell a stock the money doesn't actually hit your account for a day or two so your broker fronts it to you "on margin". Also, Robinhood has instant deposits which are also technically margin.

The correct thing to do is to watch news outlets like CNBC and come to places like /biz/, listen to the advice, double check that whether it is correct based on any market fundamentals and consent by the different groups of shareholders, mentally plan the move all the way out, and then figure out how you can screw over the people stuck on the tail end of the trend. If anyone is telling you what to do and its working, its because they're trying to force a trend. And once the trend is forced, people take profits. Once profits are taken, things go down. You can usually profit on targeting the last guy in on a trend that's trying to not get left bagholding.
