From what I understand of a basic liquidity pool, you get a share of transaction fees proportional to your contribution to the pool's total liquidity. You're relying on trade volume to outpace the impermanent loss associated with changes in price of the pair of assets you've provided to the pool. With farming, on the other hand, your return is based on the amount you receive (based on the farming contract's APY) of whatever token it is you're farming, and the eventual price of that token. But you still have the element of impermanent loss, because your pooled assets are still subject to price changes, and the amount you put in may not equal the amount you take out. The hope is then that your farming contract provides you with a greater amount of your farmed asset than you are losing to the price movements of the pool.
