Brokers have to carry the cash to float customers orders in margin accounts. Stocks require 3 days to settle after trading. In cash accounts you have to already have funds to cover those unsettled transactions. In a margin account like Goyhood you can buy and sell instantly because Goyhood covers your unsettled funds for you with their own cash (that is supposed to be real) while your stocks settle. This is how all brokers work. The massive influx of new investors during this short squeeze on top of the already record levels of active retail investing since the March crash has made the brokers have to basically naked cover all these transactions in margin accounts because they do not have the physical cash to actually cover them. It got so bad they had to literally limit the amount of shares popular stocks could trade. Goyhood could literally go bankrupt any moment right now.

WTF, why is Starbucks getting affected now? I thought WSB was deliberately targeting stocks with naked shorts where they could get the shorters by the balls.

Literally what reason short of saying "because Citadel told us to" could RH offer for this if the restriction is anything other than "we're temporarily suspending margin trades"?

Yep, pretty much Robinhood was lying about their troubles. And they didn't need to restrict stock buying if the clearing house was the problem. All they needed to do was disable margin for affected stocks, disable instant deposit and withdrawals for everything and re-implement and enforce the T+2 and settling rules. This haphazard clown rulemaking is only pointing to liquidity issues especially with the story that Robinhood got 1 billion dollars in credit from other people.

>The Depository Trust Company (DTC) handles the bookkeeping of the market while keeping custody of the actual assets by registering ownership of them under their subsidiary: Cede & Company.

>Cede technically owns substantially all of the publicly issued stock in the United States. Thus, investors do not themselves hold direct property rights in stock, but rather have contractual rights that are part of a chain of contractual rights involving Cede.

The SEC gives the DTC (a private company) full authority to restrict trading activity on any securities that they own (which they own EVERYTHING).

Consider that if brokers want to play in the market making game, they have to respect those with control over them. Imagine pointing the fingers at your obscure-to-the-public masters and thinking you can continue with business as usual. Risk of "shut it down" is higher and results in total loss if they do that, whereas blaming anonymous "clearing house procedures" gets them, at most, some bad publicity.
