Brokers have to carry the cash to float customers orders in margin accounts. Stocks require 3 days to settle after trading. In cash accounts you have to already have funds to cover those unsettled transactions. In a margin account like Goyhood you can buy and sell instantly because Goyhood covers your unsettled funds for you with their own cash (that is supposed to be real) while your stocks settle. This is how all brokers work.
