This is my understanding of the GME situation from a stock brainlet. Please correct me if my understanding isn't right.

Hedge funds take gigantic loans to borrow shares of companies like Gamestop, which they believe the stock price will decrease, at which point they sell the stock before it decreases in price, and then they buy back the same amount of shares after the price has decreased, return it to the lender and they take the difference in profit minus the lending fees. This is short selling as far as I understand it.

However, Gamestop isn't going completely under and in fact had a decent year in 2020 after downsizing their company, therefore the stock is actually undervalued, so the short sellers were wrong. I've been a casual lurker of /biz/ and I clearly remember seeing anons treating GME like a meme stock several months ago as far back as early 2020 when the massive stock market crashes were happening and I was on /biz/ just to see what was going on then. So basically you have a lot of less wealthy, individual traders buying stock in GME as a meme thinking it might increase just a little bit and Gamestop isn't going to go under, therefore making a decent profit if it increased by a few dollars per share, but then when some people realized that these hedge funds were short selling gamestop, a "short squeeze" was initiated in which combined many hundreds of thousands of individual traders started purchasing the stock causing its value to skyrocket rapidly.

Then we have all the stuff like the hedge funds seething, traders committing sudoku because now they owe the difference in the share price from when they borrowed the stocks meaning they now owe literally hundreds of dollars per share that they don't have the liquid capital to pay, and this could cause a lot of domino effects in the financial industry as these hedge funds have been fucking around for too long and now have to face the consequences for their actions.

1) brokers didn't stop selling (they wouldn't be required to by their clearing house but to not do so is market manipulation, even if unintentional)
2) DTC raises collateral in to protect hedge funds in case they can't pay but would never do the same for any group of retail investors
