Or let's have this scenario: 80% of hodlers set a sell limit at $1000. 20% set it to $34,000. Will Melvin have to pay the $34,000 guys? Say he buys out everyone there, where is the excess of the 100% coming from? Can he buy the bottom 80%, return that, and then somehow buy it all a second time at market and return it a second time?

Maybe, see following answers
>Say he buys out everyone there, where is the excess of the 100% coming from?
The stock that Melvin buys back gets returned to the initial investor, the lender. They are free to do whatever with it.
>Can he buy the bottom 80%, return that, and then somehow buy it all a second time at market and return it a second time?
Yes, but that would still drive the price up, since demand would be forced either way

They could theoretically if the bottom 1% owned all the borrowed stock. It would just mean that they essentially paid 55k per stock to a limited group of people. It would cost them around 40 billion.
I have a feeling all of this will be settled behind closed doors without them actually buying the stocks and just paying to get out of their legal obligations.

That's actually how short selling works on the other end. A single share can be used to create an infinite amount of short float, in a completely legal, non-naked way.
What constitutes naked is if the share that the lender hands out and the short seller sells to the market is a REAL share or not. The less volume available, the longer the days to cover, that is all.

I'm a market maker, I loan you one share, you sell that share to the open market with the intent to buy it back. Another short seller appears and wants to borrow a share to short. I can buy another share on the open market to lend to the next borrower (could buy it back from the same guy that you, the first short seller, just sold it to). I can do this infinite times for an infinite percent short float, there is no reserve requirement that I actually hold some percent of real shares to prevent a squeeze (like a reserve ratio that banks for for loaning out cash).

The reason is because every stockholder is still competing to get good sales (since no one believes fundamentals justify the prices).
So when a lender gets his share returned, he is looking to sell it for a good price. This can happen over and over again. The shorts will be screwed, but not to your whatever you like meme prices. No one has to buy your shares--someone will always keep selling.

The hedgies aren’t the ones who did 2008 they just managed to come out on the right side of it.
2008 happened because they made it possible and indeed highly profitably to give illegal beaners and wine aunt nurses $600,000 homes they can never pay off.
There were real assets, illiquid assets involved that you can’t just write off. A bank foreclosing on a home is a loss. A bank foreclosing on 4,000,000 homes is the end of the financial system.
It’s the results of decades of boomer manipulation in the housing market finally coming to a peak. The boomer delusion was so great about the value of their McMansions that they truly thought they could never ever go down in value. This allowed boomer banks and boomer ratings agencies to borrow massive leverage against these mortgages and other boomer insurance companies to sell insurance against defaults for these mortgage backed securities thinking it was just free money.
Free money for lenders, free money for Karen flipping her 3rd home in 14 months, free money for AIG, free money for the cities and counties collecting property tax, free money to moodys for not doing their jobs, free money to pension funds, free money to builders slapping together shitty pieces of cardboard in the middle of nowhere etc
