Long just means you are making your position thinking the price will go up. In simple stock terms, you're long if you just buy the share in the hopes it goes up.

Short means you take your position thinking the price will drop. Shorting a stock is borrowing a share at the current price with the promise to return a share of that stock at a later date. You hope the price drops so you can re-buy the share you sold for cheaper than you sold it and you can pocket the difference.

Potential risk in buying a stock is the price you paid for that share.

Potential risk for shorting a stock is infinite, since the price could just keep rising when you need to buy back. With gme, there are more shorts left to re-buy than there are in the "float" or the number of shares that are available to the public for trade.
