Alright, so this stock is massively shorted. Anywhere from 120-250% of the float, depending on what source you go to. Real stocks need to be bought by hedgies to cover their shorts, sure, I get that.

But why can it not be the case that 1) several hedge firms own stocks and shorts in GME, and 2) they can collude with each other to very, very gradually sell off their shorts, to avoid a squeeze and price explosion?

Who owns the original stocks that were shorted? Who is to say it is not other hedge firms?
