Shlomo lends Jim's stock to Moshe Hedge Fund LLC.
Moshe sells Jim's stock to Joe, who invests with Sanhedrin Investing.
Sanhedrin lends Joe's stock back to Moshe, who then sells it to Jack.
Jack, Joe, and Jim all now technically own the same stock. Moshe is obligated to purchase the stock twice, at which point nothing actually happens. Since we disconnect derivatives from underlyings, Jim and Joe don't actually have their stock tied up. Their brokers do, or someone does, somewhere (unless there's naked shorting which is illegal and not necessary for this to happen). So when Moshe closes their short position, they purchase stock at market and it effectively goes poof.
