The last few weeks, the hedge fund managers started feeling the pressure. The price rose. People started buying options. Options are contracts to buy or sell 100 of a share at a certain rate. When people sell you these contracts, they try to manage their risk. When these contracts expire in the money, the banks have to buy the shares en masse.

Gamestop's value has closed above the strike price of every call option sold in the market every day this week, and friday last week. A bunch of calls are about to expire in the money, and banks are going to have to buy millions of shares to cover their bad bets. This hurts the shorts too.
