Stock trading is much more accessible than it was 5 years ago. Multiple exchanges and phone applications that allow for trading with zero fees lowers barriers to entry. The amount of people that have started investing for the first time is really high, and their little contributions add up.

I have nothing in the game and am not an expert but a few other things happened to make this a perfect storm.

GME started buying back their owns shares. They allocated up to 300 million but only bought 200 million. Betting they wish they would have bought all 300 million. Also someone new on the board who convinced them to buy back some shares also started buying after looking at the books and realized they were actually setting pretty good. Actually it's not because that would be naked shorting, which is illegal. Also, DAILY interest rates for GME stock are through the roof right now because demand is so high on both sides: the reddit longs and the fund shorts. Plus, people who already have short contracts still have to buy which will drive the price up in the near term.

Just because a security is overpriced doesn't mean that shorting it is the right move. Even put options won't work because who'd be stupid enough to write a put on GME right now? Nobody.

The only thing a retail investor can really do with GME right now is either stay away or buy a few shares and hope to sell them before the near instantaneous crash when all the short demand dries up.

A combination of a few things:
1. Mass entry of retail investors with a low cost platform such as Robinhood
2. A centralized community of like-minded individuals able to discuss positions instantly across the US (not feasible without the internet, became much easier post-2010)
3. Last, but absolutely critical for this, the ability for investors to notice when a stock is over-shorted past 100% of its shares, and for some retarded firm to do so

#3 may have happened many more times before, but may have either gone unnoticed or simply noticed by few that couldn't take advantage of it due to lack of suitable capital as individuals or untouched since wallstreet boys may have had an unspoken rule to not fuck each other when they could be fucking the retail masses instead.

This is exactly what normally happens. Funds that try to act predatory without a good scapegoat (like right now, reddit isn't nearly the biggest fish in this pond) get destroyed by regulation and lawsuits after the fact, and everyone involved gets blacklisted. The media is owned by the parent firms of the funds pulling this shit. Plus, the funds themselves are running PR campaigns making themselves out to be the victims of market manipulation (collusion) which normally is a thing that happens, but to file a lawsuit and win you need to prove the perpetrator knowingly lied. Telling the truth about a short squeeze opportunity is totally legal.

If there was any justice, the SEC would come down hard on everyone who has a short position in GME and the next ten most shorted stocks. But the government is totally corrupt and we live in clown world so GME $1000 EOW.

Oh it’s happened before and it will happen again. People just weren’t paying attention cause it was all memecoins all the time. I vaguely recall incidents like this happening in a semi high profile way at least once a year.

What makes this go different is that it’s retail vs hedgies. Usually it’s a few hedgies battling it out with retail taking both sides. In all cases one side goes tits up.

Let’s see iirc last years hype beast. TSLA has been one that was battled over, Herbalife as well, ggg? The 3D printer craze a few years ago was a hoot. Nat gas scare after that, oh a whole fund went under last the year before last I think it was when volatility blew up that inverse vol fund. There’s more. It actually happens ALL THE TIME. Usually like I said though it’s hedgies blowing out hedgies and retail left holding the bags.

They could come to terms and take it private at an agreed upon valuation. If that happens and you own stock over the price they agreed to buy the company for you are basically fucked. It’s in essence a forced buyout at a prearranged price. Let’s say 100$ / share.

I feel that’s pretty unlikely. First GameStop would have to agree to it and why would they unless the offer was huge. Second. Buying the company would likely cost more than covering the stock. Last you’d need a buyer and a deal would take time. Rumors usually get out before it’s a done deal people know and stock price reacts accordingly.

Simple. Melvin has poured $3B into rotating out their positions that were going to be called EOW so they have a stay of execution. They are betting that the people who got into GME are going to take profits and bear the stock. They are hoping it will collapse. Remember, Melvin's new short positions are somewhere between $120 and $145 so if the stock falls back to $20 or less they can exit relatively unscathed. How's AMC shorting atm? GME is going good for me and I want to diversify

Essentially wall Street bets got together enough money to pump the gamestock stock up enough for institutional investors who shorted it to start having to buy them at much higher prices to keep their standing. This kept on happening, so it kept pumping the stock higher and higher. Most of the gains didn’t actually come from wallstreetbets money but from instituational investors constantly buying it at higher and higher prices

Retards gonna be retarded.

Paper hands gonna be revving up those wojaks first thing tomorrow to Seth at the opening price after they got shook out on a 10 share dump in the overnight that moved the market. They will ToMo their now lessened capital back in at or near all time highs and sell low agiain when they are squeezed. I swear I’ve no et chihuahuas that were more steady and rational than the weak NGMI zoom era who are losing their shit in this stock every day as it keeps going higher.

Like how do you lose money and get BTFO of a stock that has traded in the same 8$ range for the past ten hours?

And if you aren’t trying to sell to cut losses what the hell are you doing? Taking profits when the market on this thing is basically just trading single shares of stock at a time? Are people honestly this stupid ? There are only two legitimate reasons to be selling here, you want to push the stock lower to shake out the rubes and scoop their shares cheap for the ramp tomorrow or you want to push the stock lower to shake out the rubes and scoop their shares cheap to cover your shorts.

I don’t care if you bought AMC at $3 selling here is moronic. Maybe especially if you got the shares in single digits.

Do you antisemitic incels really think Biden and Yellen is going to let this get out of control, to the point where it threatens the economic stability of the United States?

No. The White House has already made it clear that they are monitoring the situation, and the fact that it's a bunch of white supremacists incels profiting off this market manipulation should make for additional motivation for Biden and Yellen to take action soon enough
