I have an extra 4K USD and believe BTC is going to crash, I can 5x short this on Kraken.

I'm new to shorting so I understand I'm selling at let's say 30,000 and if it had a big crash lets say 5k I'm buying to return my funds. Since I only have 20,000 I get essentially 2/3rds of what the drop would be so 25k x .6666.. = 16K right?

he's trying to help you because you are guaran-fucking-teed to lose your money being new at this. especially going over 3x leverage. read some articles & watch some vids at least to educate yourself.

you get 5x returns in % so a usual 20% gain would be a 100% gain on your original amount. but you also lose all of your money 5x+ faster from getting liquidated when it goes the other way, e.g it would take less than a 20% move up from the entry price to lose everything, and 20% candles in a short period do happen often.

going over 3x is a bad idea in a whale controlled market like this (they want you to think you've got it all figured out)
