I'd have to pay $2,500 on the margin per year.
Average return of SPY is 13%.
If I also ran covered calls well out of the money I could make another $1,500-$2,000 per week and put roughly another 4-6% in per year, possibly more, making my return per year close to $100,000.
If I can avoid assignment at the wrong times I could also collect dividends.

If those are futures contracts and not options, that punishes the people on the other side of the contract.

The problem is hedge funds are super leveraged, which makes it possible for them to lose more money than the entire fund is worth. Melvin was worth like $13 bil before the GME kerfuffle. Lets say they lose $20 bil. Even if they pay out the whole fund, they're still 7 bil in the hole. That doesn't just go away. If the fund literally doesn't have the money to pay, the debt moves up the chain and becomes someone else's problem, most likely a bank. The only way for the government to help out the bank in this scenario is to do a bailout.

Any realistic ideas what it'll open at tomorrow? You think GME will be roller coaster tomorrow? If so, would you sell a bit to cover your initial investment and then buy in once it bottoms out? Set your limit sell for whatever the fuck you want and wait for it to it. Since they are legally obligated to buy shares at market price, they essentially work from the bottom up of the booked sell orders. So if the shorts started covering at 400, they'd buy market, get filled at 400 for however many thousands of shares were listed there, then instantly move up the book to the next listing (which lately can be dozens of dollars higher, if you look at level 2), and buy there, and so one. Once people see this happen they will move their limit sells higher, hoping to get filled at an even better price.
As this all takes place, the stock will be getting halted over and over and over. I expect halts potentially every few minutes, as when the sells at a certain price get worked off, the fill will move potentially hundreds of dollars higher to the next booked sell.
