I read about this in a Finnish newspaper like a week ago and the founder said he was dumbfounded about the size that it has swollen to and he hopes that people copy their model / code in order to further the field as a whole.

Token has two main uses. One is governance, so by holding Aave tokens, you can vote on proposals, reforms etc. Another use is for a safety module, so if a black swan event takes place and Aave price plummets, Aave tokens will be slashed, saving the protocol from collapse (other DeFi's don't have a safety module like Aave)
