Yeah, typically it takes ~2 days before the actual purchase is finalized. Before that, it's basically an IOU note, so making a new purchase with the money that was an IOU is a free ride violation.
I don't think anything horrible happens when you do this too much, fidelity will just restrict your account so you can only use settled cash, which means you will have to involuntarily wait the 2 days.

From what I understand, on my brokerage, if you do it once you get a violation that lasts for 12 months, but no negative consequences happen until you have two notices at a time.

I've had mutual funds in an account for awhile but I wanted to diversify away from fees. I also held KO stock on its own via computershare. I moved that to my Ally account and built a dividend portfolio around that.

My 401K from my previous job is being transfered to a TD ameritrade account via rollover and because my ally account will likely reach the $500K SIPC insurance limit in the next few years, I started an ETF/Growth account at TD ameritrade.

SIPC isn't that big of a deal because the shares are held in different name than the banks and Ally doesn't trade itself, but better safe than sorry.
