Time decay will eat possible gains exponentially faster as friday approaches and option premiums will collapse for OTM options if IV slows down.
ATM option minimizes the issues of the second. Imagine you buy a 115c like a retard and GME "only" goes up $5 on average a day. It would be worthless on Friday. A near the money/ATM call would capture all of that movement with a fraction of the capital despite how stupid IV heading into monday is.
And the deeper ITM it goes (if it does so), the more its value is intrinsic which is less sensitive to momentum (and less leverage against it).
Do understand that even a ATM call might burn you bad and REALLY fast but it won't burn you as bad or as fast as the lotto tickets that are far OTM calls.

Buying at open tends to be dumb. I have a feeling a lot of people will be doing that will ALL options. This might create a very temporary spike in premium for the contracts that will eat at even the theoretical upside, I don't know what will happen with GME today. But if you are smart and just set conservative profit taking or loss selling targets BEFORE you get in there then you can mitigate the large downside you might expose yourself to. That will limit potential gains but you'd never be able to time the tops or bottoms anyway.
