Works like this.
1. You $1200 for 1 Eth - no tax
2. You exchange 1 Eth (valued at $1250 now) for 1000 shitcoin (tax on $50 gain minus gas fees)
3. Shitcoin doubles (No tax)
4. You exchange 1000 shitcoin for 2 Eth (Tax on gain of $1250, minus fees)
5. You exchange 2 Eth for $2500 (no tax as you didn't gain any money, minus fees)

So if that's all you did all year, you'd be taxed on the $50 gain from eth plus the $1250 gain from the shitcoin, minus all transaction fees
