Think of the market in terms of pressure. If everybody is on the short side of a stock, there is effectively no one left to sell, so any buyers are going to have to pay more for it. This causes a rapid price increase. This rapid price increase freaks out the first wave of shorters and they sell immediately, causing an even more rapid price increase, and then the next wave, and so on. There's little liquidity as most people are short so the stock ticks up in chunks.

It's a cascading, mass panic effect. GameStop had 96% of its shares held short (which is fucking insane) last March and Michael Burry basically came in and called bs, saying GameStop itself was worth a lot more based off of its assets alone (i.e. if GameStop declared bankruptcy tomorrow and sold everything it owned it would be worth more than its market cap).

His name has clout and pop fame now so I'm sure he drew interest to what he was doing and other big cats bought in early. The redditors only caught on after $20 a share and now think it was all their big idea.

The bigger picture from the analysis on reddit is that they beleice the stoxk has a genuinely good chance of holding value (not the insane values we will see, but higher than it was before) because they beleive it was undervalued due to stigma over the company. And wasn't properly being evaluated on their performance right now.
