imho the best you can hope for is to focus on picking companies that will guaranteed reach new ATH's due to catalysts in the near future and only buy below the 200 hour MA in increments based on multiples of the ATR. all you're really trying to do is have a nice average price below the long term average price of the stock, so you make a nice profit whenever it finally moons. i use keltner channels for this, it shows you both what "low" as well as "high" looks like relative to the long term average price, it's very useful.

200 hour and 200 day MA's are major institutional metrics, which is why you'll see price bounce off or hover around them for major stocks. i don't like the 200 day because price so rarely gets there and you're looking at holding for weeks to months before a trade is completed, maybe even a year+. 200 hour is best because you can swing trade off of it more frequently over the course of only days to weeks.

9:30 to 4pm is the official times as that's when the most traders are in the market. You want to confine your trading to those hours for the most part because that's when you will get the best liquidity and lowest slippage. If you must trade outside of market hours then just get a futures account. That way the spreads are still tight and you can trade almost 24 hours a day on the weekdays. That's what I do at least. Alternatively get a Webull account so you can trade from 4am to 8pm

the main point of my strategy is that im focusing on being long-biased on solid brand name companies with a strong economic moat. im doing this right now with AMD and AAPL for example (AAPL doing great, AMD gonna probably take another week). you could do this with shit like KO or HD or MCD too, as long as you know they have some catalyst coming up (ER if nothing else) that you are confident will push the stock higher. if it's a super crabby stock, support levels can be useful as well instead of just blindly buying in ATR increments.

if you take a stock you know is gonna make new ATH's then "low" is defined as being lower than the long term average price which the 200 hour represents. it's literally "buy low sell high" but defined using TA, low and high relative to the average price using volatility of price action moving away from it.

I actually like your idea and am a big proponent of buying big dips myself but you definitely gotta be careful. Have a huge competitive moat is key so you're on the right track there. I brought up the PTJ thing as a bit of a tangent, it's in the Market Wizards book interview and I highly recommend it. A huge part of my own strategy is buying huge dips but instead of the 200 day moving average I just look at the entire history of the chart and try to get a feel for what a "big" dip really is for that specific equity. Right now I'm sitting on over a thousand shares of SOXL I bought back in April so, e.g., for SOXL I look for anything over a 50% dip to go all in on. I wrote a Python script that watches about 50 different ETFs and stocks waiting for either a certain percentage from all time high or in the case of stuff like UVXY or natural gas that drags the bottom, I look for a certain percentage off the all time low to make a buy decision. Anyway, yeah, I like where you're going and you're going to make it. A lot of people misunderstand Buffett and think he just buys "value" at whatever price but if you look at the charts for stuff he's bought you can see it's all on generational size dips. KO, BNSF, AAPL, etc. so if it's good enough for the Oracle it's good enough for me.

cool, i'll check that book out. really your strat or my strat both work depending on what you're trying to do, like im trying to swing trade not take positions for months or years, it depends on your style and both work. can't emphasize enough how key FA is in this respect, i also don't believe in shorting (limited upside but infinite downside, bull markets are much longer and more frequent than bear markets historically, etc etc it's just always better to go long always on good companies imho), not worth the risk. 200 day is also an important metric but if you look at something like AMD for example, the last time it touched the 200 day MA was back in fucking march, you'd never be able to take a trade this whole time by that metric, that's sorta the problem i have with it (although obviously great if you bought back in march and literally did nothing until now). i also feel like it's too long of a time frame to take advantage of buy the rumor sell the news. i like to look for catalysts (like CES or ER's) and "buy in low" days or a weeks before the event, and then just wait until the pump to sell on, probably the day or two before the event even happens. for my personality i like to be able to finish trades in that time frame, that's just me. i feel like the 1h is a nice compromise between day trading (which is entirely random) and position trading.

at the end of the day it's simply about objectively defining what "low" and "high" are for stocks. that's all im doing really. i want strong stocks that have a bright future and a brand name, a strong economic moat and good social sentiment, companies that i understand (i work in the semiconductor/electronics industry), and i want to look for buying opportunities always.
