XMR is the OG privacy coin, with mandatory 100% privacy instead of opt-in privacy. Meaning the privacy set is all XMR, and the blockchain is totally opaque.

Could it be hacked? Sure, anything could be hacked. But it relies on layers of well-vetted tech and has an active dev community who are obsessed with keeping it private and secure. XMR will continue to adapt and improve, and as far as I can see no other privacy coin comes close. Even if a better privacy coin were made tomorrow, it would struggle to overtake XMR's network effect and penetration of the darknet economy.

The main liability and downside of XMR is that it works. It's private. Which means it will probably be illegal soon. It will be de-listed from centralized exchanges, and maybe even become illegal to possess.

Also it is more complicated to build a layer 2 on top of XMR. This means it will lag behind L2 scaling developments of other coins. Atomic swaps are coming soon though which will allow on-chain trading between BTC and XMR, which might allow the two to compliment one another's features.

Exciting tech, old and trusted dev team. Was literally the very first ICO, if you don't count ETH itself. REP has come a long way. But still clunky user experience and it's having difficulty distinguishing itself from existing centralized betting platforms.
