25961879 No.25961879 [Reply] [Original]

Welcome to the Monero General, dedicated to the discussion of the world's leading decentralized p2p privacy cryptocurrency!

Monero is secure, low-fee, and borderless, meaning users can send XMR around the globe despite corrupt governments or broken financial systems. Innovative privacy features such as Ring Signatures, Stealth Addresses, and Ring CT (hidden tx amounts) ensure that Monero's blockchain is obfuscated -- the financial history of all Monero users is encrypted from the prying eyes of adversaries on a public blockchain, with the proof of the transactions being possible by a Monero user willingly providing a view key for a specific transaction if needed.

Monero has also improved upon the scaling downsides of the current popular cryptos. To avoid high fees, dynamic block size ensures that the size of the blocks will increase as the amount of txs goes higher. Further, the mining network algorithm Random X establishes that anybody with a CPU can participate in mining, preventing the ASIC miner domination that creates a high barrier of entry. Lastly, the mining network will be preserved by Tail Emission -- instead of the block reward falling to zero like with Bitcoin, the block reward will gradually approach 0.6 XMR in May 2022, where it will forever stay. This constant linear inflation means the inflation rate will asymptotically go to zero while continuing to provide an incentive to miners to maintain the network.

If you still have questions, feel free to ask and a Monero Chad will be with you shortly.

saying they are "more secure" is a misnomer, as privacy has nuance. There is no perfectly private way of transacting. Monero is undoubtedly more secure than zcash because of its massive anon sets and its privacy be default.
The shitcoins you mention don't have privacy by default.
>XMR is vulnerable to time attack
so are the shitcoins you mention.
>if you move through a dex and go from or to any other coin
Monero wouldn't have a timing analysis vulnerability if it is swapped at a decentralized exchange. The problem only occurs if there is a centralized exchange and you are leaking metadata to the centralized exchange.

It really seems that we are heading towards a cashless society, and if we do, am I right that Monero (and maybe any other privacy coins) are going to be the literally the only way to conduct a financial transaction? For this reason I'm thinking that this coin has got a genuinely useful use case, especially in the long run as our privacy is being eroded. I'm really considering buying and holding for the long term bros....

One thing that I'm not sure about is what is going to happen when Monero is inevitably banned - I'm thinking the value will go up right because it will be far harder to get your hands on, anyone wanting to buy drugs on the dark net or have any other private transaction is going to have to literally bargain with the holders to get their hands on this stuff, is that right?

Scarcity = higher prices. Monero will eventually be the only means of payment on the darknet black markets so demand will be consistent and rise as more people turn to buying drugs online.

In fact, XMR dealers selling Monero for cash on street corners would likely become a thing.

Some people don't like Kraken because it is a centralized kyc exchange. These anons don't want the exchange to have their information and data that, at a certain point of time, they purchased Monero.

Its too obvious to not become a thing:

1. Normies will increasingly prefer the convenience and safety of buying drugs online

2. Monero will become the default and only means of payment on the DNM.

3. Plenty of normies will prefer foolproof simplicity over even minor "complexity" i.e. atomic swapping

4. "Dealing" XMR would be as easy as printing out paper wallets, folding em up and handing em out like crack vials.

This might be a little tricky if the price is still volatile, but if you created and sold the wallets on a daily basis it could work.

>How is Monero’s privacy different from other coins?

Monero uses three different privacy technologies: ring signatures, ring confidential transactions (ringCT), and stealth addresses. These hide the sender, amount, and receiver in the transaction, respectively. All transactions on the network are private by mandate; there is no way to accidentally send a transparent transaction. This feature is exclusive to Monero. You do not need to trust anyone else with your privacy.

>How is Monero different from Bitcoin?

Monero is not based on Bitcoin. It is based on the CryptoNote protocol. Bitcoin is a completely transparent system, where people can see exactly how much money is being sent from one user to another. Monero hides this information to protect user privacy in all transactions. It also has a dynamic block size and dynamic fees, an ASIC-resistant proof of work (RandomX), and a Tail Emission, among several other changes.

>What is fungibility, and why is it important?

Fungibility is a simple property of money such that there are no differences between two amounts of the same value. If two people exchanged a 10 and two 5’s, then no one would lose out. However, let’s suppose that everyone knows the 10 was previously used in a ransomware attack. Is the other person still going to make the trade? Probably not, even if the person with the 10 has no connection with the ransomware. This is a problem, since the receiver of money needs to constantly check the money they are receiving to not end up with tainted coins. Monero is fungible, which means people do not need to go through this effort.

Which is why atomic swaps can't come soon enough, the more acquisition friction normies have to deal with the less likely they are to bother. Yeah, you create and print out fixed-amount XMR wallets for $25, $50, $75 and $100 amounts.

Normie rolls up, sez "yo dawg, I need a fiddy" and he hands you $60, the extra $10 being the premium he pays for the convenience of buying direct.

Easiest $10 you ever made.

Normie goes home, regenerates wallet, sends funds directly to DNM and seamlessly orders some prime hash.

Everybody wins.

The same way you can be sure that any drug dealer that pushes sub-prime product will eventually be "removed" from the market.

Dealers covet return buyers, so an XMR dealer would be highly incentivized to NOT fuck you like that.

The reason this is allowed on Kraken is because Kraken is KYC and is reporting that you bought KNOWN amounts of XMR. So your identity is attached to the purchase. If you do anything with the funds directly from Kraken it can be traced. Kraken will also report that you withdrew X amount of XMR to key XYZ, and while this is where the audit trail stops, you've gotten more of a trail on you rather than if you were to buy LTC or something on Kraken, send it to another non-KYC exchange, and purchase your XMR there.

Normally when I'm trading shitcoins I either shill or fud depending on my position, often flipping between the two in the same day. I can't bring myself to do that with Monero though, it's just too good. Even when I have a buy order I'm trying to get filled, I can only shill. Unless you have hundreds of XMR just store them in Cake wallet. It's pretty secure (pass-protect it or even better, fingerprint). Then you can also use it ezpz for your minecraft purchases when necessary.

OK. 2017/2018 matches the "current" prices in the table. I'm still looking for a link. I know the paper is real - I just want to read further in depth beyond the chart.

I checked the plebbit front page just to see if anyone posted about this, and sure enough someone did, and one of the first responses was about Monero. I hate plebbit with a passion, but it the best tool for seeing what the normies are doing. And sure enough, the normies are starting to talk about Monero.
It's slowly starting to happen lads. KEEP STACKING.

It depends if you are going to comply anyways I guess. You can't forget the fingerprint to cakewallet. Cops do unconstitutional searches all the time.

It still will, fren. Once Tether blows its top and all the women and "rap enthusiasts" who are fomo'ing into this latest rally lose all their money, big brother (ze/zir) will have have to step in to save us from ourselves.

The real reason ofc is that king dollar hates competition and is especially vulnerable these days, plus our overlords need to trap capital where it can be siezed via taxation and inflation because they're fucking broke. Illicit activity is crypto's only use-case.
