Working at any FAANG company essentially means selling your soul for profit.
You're doing Satan's work, spying on people, manipulating their media, stockpiling their information to abuse them with later one day.
But damn you make a massive amount of money.
Web dev here and I wouldn't do it. I like my small company, I'm still paid well with good benefits, and I get to keep my soul.

Actual full-time straight white male Googler here. Not a LARP.

As much as I despise the ultra-woke culture + how your career / perf trajectory is unironically impacted by your wokeness/not white maleness, the answer to your question is “Yes” anon.

Once bat soup happened, most of my fellow corporate wagies from college dealt with job loss, pay cuts, and a looming fear that they could be fired at any point. I didn’t have to deal with this at all. Job was safu.

At least for me, with my useless ass college major, the financial comfiness (pay raises, bonuses, $1000 to spend on WFH setup) during a global pandemic outweighed the pain of corporate bloat and far-left insanity. (Note: I vote dem and went to a very liberal school. Even considering this, these people are fucking insane to me.)

To quote one of my fellow coworkers when I was there. "When everyone has run a triathlon it's no longer interesting." That kinda sums up the folks you'll encounter. No. Well kinda/maybe.

No because I *believe* (not 100% confident) that we’ve cut headcount expectations quite a bit to save $$$ (ever since Ruth [stingy CFO lady] showed up, the money hasn’t been flowing as freely.) At least for my team - we usually have 1-3 times of the year where we hire new teammates and haven’t hired anyone new in >1 year. I know we’re still hiring across the company, probably just at a lower capacity.

I say maybe because a lot of roles are tied to specific offices, and this may have laxed a bit since covid. Eg you find a role that’s a great fit, but it’s located in fucking Africa or some shit. Happens all the time when I’m looking for internal mobility. Remote/WFH should theoretically open a lot more roles this way. (Although I guess we’re not going full remote so idk)

Extremely true and is the current issue I’m facing. Everyone is type A, never broken a rule in their life, work until midnight every day for an entire cycle, lifelong teacher’s pet type of individual.

Which doesn’t make any sense to me because I work maybe 4-5 hours a day lmao.

Was hoping I’d meet more like-minded people that want to create big 10x gamechanging deliverables, but everyone just wants a lot of small, visible, useless wins. Wack.

>>25936970
I’m not sure. I follow crypto boards internally, and only a select few are linkpilled. We’re still early anon.

Iirc some google reps were present for some presentation/demo of the bigquery adaptor thing at (I think) some base protocol thing in November. This leads me to believe the teams are still connected, I just dk anything about the current working relationship. We’re going to make it anon. 5k linklet here.

There’s a good bit of people on the right here, but you’ll only get that out of them in a private/personal convo. It’s just that 30-40% of the company are really loud and constantly-looking-to-be-offended type of leftists.

It’s definitely part of it. I’d say the primary issue is the level of corporate bloat and how it affects performance reviews.

Employees are typically going to do whatever helps their pocketbook + career the most. Currently, perf isn’t set up to reward people who put out high quality output (ie a good sustainable product). Rather, it’s set up to reward people that put out high-quantity work, create arbitrary deadlines for the dumbest shit, stick to those arbitrary deadlines, ruthlessly document everything, type a overload, etc.

From a career perspective, there’s just a lot more personal value to be had in launching some half-assed, objectively bad product or reorg on-time (before a cycle ends).....compared to a top-notch deliverable that may take longer than a cycle to deliver.

I learned this lesson by launching something objectively good at the end of a cycle. I couldn’t measure/demonstrate impact in perf because I just launched it. So, management dgaf. Next cycle comes around, I measure impact and find out that my deliverable WAY exceeded expectations. I follow-up and present on this in perf, but management still dgaf because the actual work was done in a previous cycle and I’m just measuring it now.

There’s a fantastic Steve Jobs quote out there somewhere about how companies start with people that love/care for the product, and as they go big/corporate, lose those people to corporate drones that dgaf about the product and only care about their career. If any anon can dig it up that’d be great - because this perfectly explains my qualms with the googs.

Yeah, Jobs talked about this. The company starts focusing more on quantity because it sees constant returns even if focusing on quality would give the same returns over a longer period. Take the free courses offered by Google on Google Ads, Analytics, and Merchant Center. I thought my certs/knowledge there were worthless until they contacted me on LinkedIn (likely searching for people w experience/certs in these products). I received feedback that my product knowledge in this space is what set me over the edge.

Most entry level roles (sales, support, implementation) touch the Ads ecosystem while Cloud and other products are more mid-level.

When I got my certs back in the day, you had to read/study the shittiest 400+ page whitepaper. They’ve made this course 100x easier and colorful and normie friendly since then, so would recommend.

They all no larp wanted me at the time really bad since I was well known throughout my university as being the go to person for anything related to products or design. They took me to dinners with senior old ass engineers no joke where I got to hear a ton of cool insider stories from the early days trying to convince me to join. Like most of the people from Apple who took me to dinner were all engineers working around Steve Jobs designing the original MacBook laptop and shit Kek.
Anyways, I ended up deciding to start my own company at that time and have loved every moment of getting to build products I like and pick what clients I want to do work for, full flexibility while maintaining whatever life I want since they legit tell me they are afraid I’ll leave them. It’s been more than 7 years at this point and honestly I can’t recommend it enough. Save some money and get out. I went into a similar job (trading at a market making firm) with the same sort of expectations and was similarly disappointed. Everyone was just doing whatever they perceived was the least risk for themselves and spending significant time pandering politically. That was what tends to be rewarded in large organizations so those people rise to the tops. It's easy to get by and not work that hard, but it sucks the soul out of you day by day. After 6 year it was hell and I quit despite making 400k/year.
It took me almost a year to properly recover, but now life is great. My time is all my own to spend with friends and focus on my hobbies. Financially I'm making even more working for myself than I was at the job, but even if I were making a fifth I'd still be way happier.
If you're working at google now and aren't a total degenerate or crazy spender, you'll be fine with respect to money. Time you can never get back.

Stop working for FANG. 2016-2020 revealed how toxic and shitty those companies are. If you want to take the "tech" pill then get a job at a defense contractor that actually treats in employees like humans with HR departments that don't care if you vote trump/libertarian/ anyone to the right of bernie sanders.

The future is in biotech and space anyways, nobody gives a fuck about social Media anymore anyways

blockchain keyword shortcut has a page with a couple different boards. boards are fairly quiet... most action happens within the group chat.

yeah I noted in an earlier post that not a lot of folks are linkpilled... yet. there’s a few references to integrations and a sergey meme or two if you search the group chat for link.

I was surprised that its mostly a bunch of filthy btc maximalists. tbf though, some of these guys were talking about defi REALLY early. just similar to this board, if you can pick out the legitposters from larpposters, it’s a nice chat to be in.

this is prolly my last post in this thread but if you shoot me that shortcut we can chat some moar

>biotech and space

This, this and this.

Tech is saturated even if you make human-like AI. You'll net get the feel of tinkering Quake3 C code, early around 2K. The "S" phase is saturated. Zero to One has some info on commoification. Tech is a commodity, data bay be differentiator. But soon data with ML service would be sold to everybody. Soon it will be an essential cost to the business just like Salesforce / SAP.

Real innovation is happening in biotech and genomics. And some in blockchain.

Future based career. Have a CFA charter and then specialise on BioTech and Blockchain companies, and say "fuck you" to bloated commodity tech middle-management.

lol google has been trying to hire me for like 3 years (i'm a programmer) but i literally don't give a shit. I come from games and some other industries but for whatever reason i couldn't even bother to prep for the google interview because i didn't care about working there, and the recruiter was on my ass for weeks saying we could do another interview after i clearly wasn't prepared for the first, kind of felt bad for him. Idk maybe i'll actually go for it so i can finish off my career with a little more money in the next few years after making it. lmao.

The dumb obsession a lot of these companies have with the algo and data structure questions really is retarded. Nobody in the real world gives a shit if you can design a basic linked list implementation.

A much better test would be to hand someone a broken sample app and tell them to fix it, but I guess that takes to much time and it'd get leaked immediately. DESU I feel there's money to be made designing better dev interview questions.

He says he just works on a tiny internal project that does fuck all, and he has to wade through a shit load of bureaucracy just to get anything merged.
