Probably the same way as traditional brokerages and MMs with stocks and options. You short it, they then buy an equivalent amount to keep themselves delta neutral (price movement wont effect anything) and then pocket the trade fees, borrowing fees, slippage, sell the data and flow, etc.

i bought Zec at 80 after 25% daily surge. It then proceeded to surge another 20%. liquidated. I shorted eth at 1060 with a target of 1020 and it reversed at 1030 up past 1115. liquidated. Seems like less than a 5% movement the wrong way liquidates you. I was probably just using too much margin across too many trades.

They see the order book and take the opposite side of the trade to liquidate you when there are enough idiots on the same side of a trade.

Fees and liquidations. When someone shorts on bitmex they arent shorting against the exchange, they are selling contracts that someone else bought. When they close, they are buying contracts someone is selling.
