Well Chainlink really isn't a single project in a typical sense. It's one of the most meaningful projects on the planet and it's constantly expanding. It was originally supposed to be a complete smartcontract platform. And I think they are drifting back to that goal. Smartcontract.com will be where you go to compose and run your smartcontracts, it will be it's own chain ultimately. No one is doing this shit at the level of proficiency as Sergey and Ari. Think of it, you could ask the same question about trusted computing or identity management or randomness. Why would they try and build those in addition to oracles? Because no one else doesn't understand these problems and their attack vectors in depth like Sergey and Ari. They have to built them to get them like they want them

This literally was the plan before they decided to focus on oracles first. I believe they thought the rest of the god protocol would be ready around the time when they finish with oracles.
