Even if Tether doesn't back USDT with USD in its entirety, I don't think it's such a big danger.

The only way it would become an issue is if everyone tried to cash out their USDT directly through Tether, in which case there wouldn't be enough funds to go around and then people would realise. But it would have to be a epic mass exodus, as they will have some reserves so could handle a large amount of USDT holders cashing out without issue.

And a mass exodus would only occur if the crypto market had been so badly crushed that people holding USDT would rather cash out via Tether instead of buying back in the market. But by that point, the damage to the market would be so great that people suddenly finding out about Tether couldn't make the market dump much lower than it already had by that point.

TLDR: If anything shady is going on with Tether, we're unlikely to find out until the market has already died anyway.
