My day typically starts by checking for orders, starting prints while drinking coffee, then I more or less chill until they finish.

I was in the right place in the right time, so to speak, and had the knowledge to turn 3d printing for a hobby into a full time job. It's not something any 'tard can do (well, it is). You have to know how to maintain your fleet of printers, 3d/CAD stuff, etc. Those were all skills I already had from a lifetime of tinkering and such.

I also used to program/code a lot, so I wrote macros that automate almost everything. If I had printers with belt buildplates, I could unironically feed my order info into my slicer and just have my machines print out shit without me ever touching them.

Belt 3d printers are pretty soon, but maybe one day.

Automation was replacing jobs since the industrial revolution. That is what is replacing jobs. For example the invention of the spreadsheet made an awful lot of people redundant over time. These things don't happen overnight. I doubt that most weren't able to find something else to do. As long as LinkedIn and Indeed is full of jobs, nothing to worry about.

There are two types on machine learning, supervised and unsupervised.

Supervised, you give it a task and through trial end error it finds the most optimal way of doing said task, example: the chess "AI" that beat the world champion. These usually are good at a thing, much better than a human but in my personal opinion they cannot think outside the box. Cannot reinvent how.we do it.

Unsupervised. These are used to find trends and patterns the we humans cannot fully comprehend or explain how. Is it flawless? I doubt that it ever was and will be. Again, algorithms lack common sense. Look up Tricks from the stupid data miner. Basically a guy used machine learning and concluded that the cheese production in Bangladesh drives the S&P 500 or Chase's Prediction of Mortgage risk model.

Anyways, my point is that everything that is being replaced is the monotonous and repetative. Maybe, this time it will be different but historically as jobs were replaced new ones where created.

I paint fire hydrants for a living. Not a lot of people know this but you actually need to be licensed to paint fire hydrants. The test to become a painter is hard. You need to know all the rules of the road and emergency procedures. Because of this there aren't many of us. I get paid to fly around the country and paint hydrants. Hotels, plane tickets, and food is all paid for. Once, I was working in the Bronx in New York, it was my first month on the job. I used to work with a guy named Ronnie. He taught me everything I needed to know about the job. The guy grew up in the city, knew all the Ins and Outs, where to get the best paint. Anyway, one day I was working in the Bronx with Ronnie and a fire broke out at a high rise apartment building. The firefighters couldn't legally use the fire hydrant because it had just been installed a week prior and had not been painted yet. Rules dictate a painter has to apply at least three coatings of paint to and assay the job before the hydrant can be used. They got a cruiser to pick me up and escort me to the site, sirens blaring. We must have been going over 100 miles an hour through busy streets and traffic, barely dodging rickshaws as we passed through chinatown. It was the fastest way through the city center you see. We pulled up to the fire and I began painting. I was new but Ronnie taught me a lot. I remembered his advice about pretending the brush was my tongue and that I was making love to a beautiful woman. I got the job done quickly and the fire fighters got to work. All in all only a few floors burned down and I was able to save the rest of the building and the happy families. It's a hard job but it pays well plus I enjoy helping the community.

Be warned that the job market has a lot of HR retards that will try to hire someone for "nodejs backend" and expect you to say you have 50 years of experience on a particular framework, when in reality making a weekend project with it is all you need if you're already good at general programming and reading API docs.

Our group does a lot of quantum computing and various other quantum tech research. I also have a very small business on the side at home 3D printing which pays all my living expenses (rent bills etc). Recently I've been looking into finance and stocks and such, a lot of physicists move into finance and since I come from a poor background it's really appealing to me.

Only thing that discourages me is that in finance the work is money, everything I do is with the goal of increasing my bank balance, but in physics I can work on something fantastic and cutting edge and there will be money in my bank at the end of the month without me worrying about it. I feel like it's kind of doubling up on my time, do something I like and get paid.

IT guy here, it’s not all bad thankfully. I’ve WFH for over 5yrs now and funny enough work more from the office now than ever. Feels good and after awhile working from home can get to you.

Pay isn’t bad good benefits and absolutely no libshit environment. I do want to leave at some point though. Been accumulating my bags and hoping this year will really make some gains.
