you might want to talk to a tax pro. I think there's a limit on how far back you can go to claim expenses. So it's sort of a catch-22 on long hodls. You need to deduct the expense within 3 years but the IRS doesn't allow you to deduct expenses for a business that doesn't make money except in rare and very specific circumstances. So if you stockpile inventory for more than 3 years without showing a profit you might get screwed and wind up owing taxes on the full sale price when you finally cash out. Every situation is different and I am not a tax professional though.

Being that silver was trading at about $18 before the March crash in *all* assets, we're looking at about a 35% draw down. While unpleasant, equities fell that much, too, as did other more esoteric investments during that time period. However, outside of a bubble, silver does not fall 90% which has happened multiple times with cryptocurrencies. Cryptocurrencies are based entirely upon belief. Without that belief, they are truly worth nothing. PMs are highly unlikely to ever be worth zero.

Conditions are a bit different now; a global freeze of all economic activity for an undetermined period was a crisis of liquidity. The kind of crisis that the next retracement we can likely expect will still be fear-based, but it will most likely be one of over-leverage and subsequent market destabilization, resulting in a terminator shock like effect that takes us beyond a deleveraging to full-on depression.
Under these conditions, stores of value tied to real assets: commodities, foodstuffs, minerals, precious metals, and (for some) crypto are the crem de la crem.
I believe that BTC is not a store of value insomuch as other crypto tokens represent actual market desires, like privacy, or trustless efficiency, etc. These have a sort of intrinsic value, compared to, say the size of your userbase being calculated as a line item on your balance sheet.
We are already in the middle of a hoover-recoveryesque period, and with QE-infinity, the economy will just die just the death of a whimper, not a bang.
At least, that's what it seems to me.

digital ledger technology is as big an invention as the internet is. financial speculation is only the small vanguard of what is coming with it. But, it's all that people really know about, and assessing the value of one world-changing technology against another is left to the market to decide. ARPA is a game-changer, for example, right up there with RSR and LINK, but these penetrate completely different aspects of real market economies yet are measured against each other as effective slaves to bitcoin's market cap as the flagship.
These things do not have value unto themselves, objective from your perception and subsequent judgement of them. Horses have value according to their usefulness and rarity, and that value is only measured in relation to the individual; you would have to pay me a substantial amount for me to take on a horse, whereas someone else would pay gladly.
The irony is that while cryptocurrencies are based entirely upon belief, so to are all fiat currencies, and yet still, business happens and people transact. The intrinsic value of precious metals, too, is nothing but a belief, and yet the majority of my portfolio is allocated to them.
Whoever tries to shit-talk one asset against another instead of seeing their benefits is just arguing against themselves because they don't want to change their mind or admit the possibility of being wrong. It's the sign of a calcified mind with static opinions, afraid of growing, too scared to look beyond the small world they've created for themselves, and it is what keeps people from being truly humble, and actually rich.

I have traded through two (now coming on three) major asset bubbles and I know bullshit when I see it. Paper currencies are more convenient than metal coins. Period. However, the currencies must be redeemable in metal to enforce discipline on the monetary authorities. A benefit of a pure fiat currency is that the purchasing power of the currency is easier to manipulate to adjust for economic times, which was Keynes' argument. However, very few people have the discipline to tighten monetary policy in good times to undo the loosening during the bad times.

As for Rome, it fell in part because it debauched its currency (see the reign of Vespasian). Had Rome not debauched its currency, it might have survived a bit long. Hard currencies also enforce discipline on imperial adventuring.

You don't know anything. Read some books anon. The Romans famously massively diluted their currency by gradually removing the gold and silver contents of their coinage, this of course led to economic ruin and capital flight out of Rome and into Constantinople, where they had a pure gold coinage. This scenario has repeated itself countless times before, and anyone vaguely familiar with history would know that.

Why did we turn to paper notes? Convenience. Initially, the paper notes were exchangeable for a fixed ratio of gold. This system worked great, but of course the ever dependable greed of the upper caste of society always wish to maintain a monopoly on money, and over time have done away with money having any tangible value whatsoever and replaced it with a fiat(Latin for: from nothing to something, ie only has value by royal decree)

Thanks and I agree with the line of thinking.
So the reason nobody is trying to get back to gold backed currency is just due to the paradigm that this is just the way it is and it's going to be like this.
The crazy thing is even when hyperinflation happens, people will still continue to depend on this system as long as they don't starve. And the ones that starve are just unlucky.
Nobody cares about implementing a rigid and sensible system. It's too much work.
We're lazy and we don't care if it kills us.

Why not? If I copied the Facebook source code and ran it on my own server farm, I would have a Facebook product. It would just be a matter of getting people to use the product. Is that your line of thinking with Monero, that if I copied the source code and created Buttnero that no one will use it? What about if Buttnero is backed by silver? What if I use the source code to create the "killer app" that is so far lacking in each and every cryptocurrency system?

Note: I don't give a shit about the existing Monero tokens and if I created a killer app, I would not use or accept Monero tokens. So, why is Monero, without a killer app, valuable against my hypothetical killer app based in part on Monero source code?

Look at the pathetic actions of Wall Street and the Federal Reserve. They fear gold because it would end their bullshit games. How could shitty companies like Citigroup get bailed out if the bailout required gold? "Hey, everybody who isn't an investor in Shittygroup! Give me your gold because they screwed up and bought their own fraudulent CDOs! If you don't give us your gold, the CEO won't get his bonus and might become poor. Oh, you'll get nothing for giving us your gold other than our thanks (yeah, fuck you, plebe)."

None other than Paul Volcker himself has said, "Gold is the enemy." Gold enforces discipline without the need for regulation. What will keep banks in line with a gold (or silver or whatever specie is used) standard is a potential bank run during which *specie* must be redeemable to the noteholder.

Nobody is trying to go back to a gold standard because very wealthy and powerful people are against it. Furthermore, there is a lot of momentum so it's difficult to change even if one wanted to. Globalism is based on the fiat system and if we were to change it to a specie-backed system, the US would almost certainly lose its position as the world hegemon. In fact, going to a specie-backed system would probably unwind globalism, which the globalists do not want.

Finally, we've already gone down the road to ruin to the multiple bailouts of Wall Street such that the US economy is nothing but a series of bubbles. Just look at Washington D.C. It's now open pillaging; stealing everything that isn't nailed down without any subtlety. They're (all politicians regardless of political party) stealing all they can before the whole thing goes to shit. We will only possibly return to a gold or bimetallic standard in the face of a genuine currency crisis.

As a money transfer mechanism, all cryptocurrencies have some sort of value. However, why should the price of the token keep going up? Would it be something like Coinbase that is actually of value since it allows me to convert a cryptocurrency into a form of money that I can actually use to buy things at a store?

Let's keep watching. Just as tins of sardines have tremendous value in prison but very little real value in real life, I believe that cryptocurrencies are tins of sardines in our current prison of yet another major central bank created bubble. It doesn't necessarily have to, I never said it did. However if it becomes a more widespread medium of exchange, people are going to tend to hold onto small amounts for convenience, which would drive down liquidity and potentially increase the price. On the other hand speculators could just as easily be dominating the price into the long term future and make it more unstable. The tech is there and being used though.

Also I would not mind at all to use sardines as a medium of exchange on small purchases. Obviously paper and digital fiat is more convenient but sardines do have real utility and are a good store of value (as long as you rotate stock).

Some crypto, like Ethereum and Chainlink, have utility, and the Blockchain and smart contracts will clearly be game changers, but they will appreciate in price as utilities, not as stores of value.

The average person is already primed to exist for digital popularity scores (likes, followers, views) and being under priviliged is also nothing new in a lawful society where crime is punished. They only need a crisis here and there to redefine crime as certain ideas and then nobody will bat an eye that a person chooses freedom over wealth. It's funny that socialists are moving to create a society of classes and essentially make your basic rights subject to a state enforced market system. If you sing to their tune yeah you can live in the upper class quarters in return.

No, you did not. However, I am also not attacking the premise of a distributed system of transferring money. My question is why the tokens of exchange keep going up in price to astronomical levels. The real value is in the exchange system (the technology deployed in a usable system), not the tokens.

The existing financial system is an exchange system with token (sovereign currencies). Why hasn't any token appreciated 10,000x? Why is it that movements of even 10% are quite unusual? At least these tokens exchanged in the international financial system are legal tender and must be used to pay taxes and fulfill most contracts.

That is yet another argument I make that all cryptocurrencies are major bubbles. For those that make massive gains and cash out their casino chips, good for them. But everyone else speculating is going to be wiped out because they believed the lie that it's an investment. It's no more an investment than lottery tickets. Someone's bound to win; many more must lose.

yep Blue Lagoon has the "Onion" Mountain copper prospect, one of the most interesting copper targets in BC in my humble opinion. Onion Mountain has had everything from Copper to Gold to Palladium discovered on its flanks over the years. Placer gold glitters in its bedrock walled creeks, molybdenum and copper flank its high slopes. Silver and lead lay at its peak. Some of my favorite territory as a child to wander on horse back across. O man do I miss that territory.

this little scrap of paper shows the workings of the 1200 level at the Cariboo Gold Quartz Mine, the precursor to the Barkerville Gold Project where I am currently based. where the map has a circle is the famous Saunders and Rainbow fault meeting point where 200oz of gold per tonne were pulled from the vein going to surface. However that vein was fractured and disjointed, so part of it is missing, likely at or near surface and has never been located.

yes, my house is built on a placer claim patented in 1861. The yard has about 1/10 oz gold per ton down to 30 feet in glacial till and fossil alluvium. Never been worked and probably never will be since each lot is worth a couple thousand in gold and about 30 thousand as land to live on.

just make sure you own the mineral rights with the patent, since I believe they can be sold separately in the US. You don't want to buy or build a house only to have a mining company come in and knock it down for the gold under it.

Halfwits associate lower real yields with higher gold prices. What they don't get is that inflation isn't linear and that the CPI is a shit measure. Right now bonds got sold off a bit, which is causing idiots to sell gold. They don't get hat people are selling bonds because they realize 1% doesn't compensate for 10 year inflation and that the government is essentially insolvent on the 30 year. "real yields" are derived from subtracting the TIPS yield from the comparable T-Bond. TIPS only considers CPI as inflation. I'm drinking, but I think you see the point

But to answer your question, yes, higher yields mean more expensive debt, as you say, so that the government can't be funded, but they also mean that the stock market will crash, because it's in such a bubble that even a 1% rate of risk-free return in the bond market will cause it to collapse in an avalanche of selling and triggered stop-loss orders.

Very expensive. You can buy yield futures if you want to try to make a loooooooot of money, but the fed buying more would liquidate you in a couple days. I buy pms/miners and then hedge with short dated tlt puts. If you want a portfolio position, long bond yield futures will likely make a lot of money, but it can go to zero in a lot of cases. Portfolio positions != hedges and hedges != portfolio positions. The "conservative" thing to do is buy inflation bets (gold/silver etc) and then hedge a bond market bloodbath with TLT puts about 2 months out, a few dozen % otm.
>>25681126
Yes. The forex rate is what will start any major inflation. Natural 30 year rates for the present US government would be like 10-15%. This would make all long term debt on corporates yield more than that since the US gov has an unlimitied claim on corporate income. But if they stop yields, then you'll see more money flow out of dollars to other currencies... Like I said I'm a little tipsy.

You have not yet internalized the totality of the present economy, glowie. Middle ground is impossible in bubbles like this. Middle ground requires a schizophrenic view of the world where incompatible and contradictory positions are assumed at the same resolutions.
>We need to provide a basic level of care!
>Government spending is killing the economy!

>We need to cut taxes so the economy grows! Inflation is bad!
>We need to spend more so the economy grows! Inflation is bad!

This was the only outcome that was ever gonna happen. The middle is schizophrenic itself and has then attempted to suppress both extremes which pointed out how its core beliefs were the same as either extreme. "The middle" you refer to was a historical anomaly of pure insanity. and whether the middle is schizo or not doesn't really matter since far more americans fall in the middle than on the right or the left. But as you say, it's the inequalities that produce movement. I just don't really think the government needs to move so much in unpopular directions and ought to move more in ways the people actually want. Whatever those may be. anything can be exchanged. when information is transacted, this forms a market. that which is being exchanged is valued. This value is either intrinsic or extrinsic. There is no intrinsic value, there is only perception. There is no extrinsic value, there is only judgement. From where does value arise? From the desire of those individuals who together form a market. This market is in place in order to facilitate the meeting of this desire. The market serves the desire. It could be fear. For example, cybersecurity. It could be the hope of a technological future, like TSLA and SRAC. It could be the desire for privacy. This is the value represented by Monero. In this sense, Monero is a store of value representative of the market's desire for privacy and anonymity in transactions. The size of this market is massive. In this way, everything is a store of value, it's just a matter of what is being valued, and what it represents. Again, as above, there is a common tendency to limit one's appreciation because of an over-reliance on terms and definitions of judgement and opinions. This keeps people from seeing opportunities, and has them argue against themselves in making decisions, resulting in emotionally-biased decisions that are informed by the very market whose desires they are now victims of. Wake up.

Why wouldn't AUN go up more than NIM because we're buying before the mine has been shown to successfully run?

You don't understand what "store of value means". Monero is a token money for drug dealers and crypto tax dodgers. It's not a store of value because it isn't inherently useful. No value is "stored" because the token can only be exchanged. Gold/iron/copper/silver is stored value because the refined metal can be used for the needs of society.
With that said Monero is cheap. But I'm in other privacy coins ;)

Ok since I now cant sleep I ll explain some points.

Aurcana Corp is trying to restart their RV Mine, and needs money so they got another loan on top of their previous loans and diluted their stock.

Nicola is a relatively new company rising from a previously poorly operated project. Nicola holds three major properties including a fully operational contract mill capable of processing Nicola's own ore and material shipped in from companies like Gavin Mines who are partnered with Nicola. There are only two of these contract mills in BC, and Nicola's is the larger and better setup of the two, the other being the Greenwood mill operated by Golden Dawn Resources. Nicola could be operating their Treasure mountain property fairly soon, and will be making money off several mill contracts as well. They hopefully will become a major player in BC mining in the coming years.

All this info can be found on the respective websites, and I really do suggest you research some of this yourself, its actually rather interesting to understand how these companies operate.

If a mine has been closed down for some time, how long does it take them to start up production again? What is required?

>They hopefully will become a major player in BC mining in the coming years.
They seem like a great company and their price is so low.

Do you think Aurcana's stock is going to bounce back up a bit after this pullback? I want to sell most or all of it if it goes back up 10% or so.
Would it keep falling?

maybe... maybe I ve already been looking a few times in the past. An old boy called Herold McGowen would go up there in the 70s with a black light and can of spray paint at night, marking where tungsten ore appeared as gold is associated with it on that area. Than he would set off charges the next evening and cart away the best ore he found for hand milling.

>>25683112
for your first point it depends on if the mothballed mine still have permits or not, in this case Treasure mountain is fully permitted and basically turn key within 4-10 weeks of getting the green light to operate. The mill is fully operational as well, but has been operating at reduced capacity to limit unneeded wear.

For your second point on Aurcana I believe they will take another bit of a dip than rebound as people calm down but its hard to tell. Some major investors were already wary of Aurcana since Sprott left the company on bad terms and they may take off as well if they think the project wont actually go on line as scheduled. We will have to see in a week.

Because precious metals and commodities in general declined. We have been in a bear market for almost 10 years. We've only just gotten out of it.

Mining equities are essentially just a form of leverage to the commodities that they are mining - all of the fundamentals of course matter, and there's great variance between every company, but ultimately they follow the commodity itself. If the fundamentals are very good and commodity is bullish, you are positively leveraged. If the fundamentals are bad and the commodity is bearish, you are more than likely going to lose all of your money.

Mining is extremely capex (capital expenditures) heavy. Share dilution is always a possibility as long as money needs to be raised to move a project further along. This is why outstanding debt and cash reserves is such a big deal to valuations
