People are buying it, hoping it will be the next big thing in the future.
Naturally, the prices start to go up and prompt more people to buy it so they won't be "left behind".
This continues for a while until the "smartest" (aka crypto-ponzi scheme experts) start to sell their now valuable coins while others are buying in the hopes of not being "left behind". Some of the later buyers from the last "wave" will catch up to what is going on and start selling it as well.
Eventually this "wave" stops, either because all the fools available already bought it or enough sellers jumped the ship after getting what they were after, so the coin starts to go down.
It leaves most later buyers without the money they thought would be able to get, forcing them to wait for their next opportunity (turning some of the later buyers into the next sellers of the next wave).

Each new wave of a cryptocurrency has more participants than the former if they are successful.
The later buyers's population will keep getting bigger and bigger with each wave of speculation.
It is an ingenous ponzi-scheme because of three main aspects:
-It is potentially continous, which means every cryptocurrency has the potential of swallowing more people as big as the global population.
-usually hard to track the mastermind(s) because there are people being fooled into helping their cause usually simutaneously.
-Each new wave creates more victims turning into accomplices later on
