I'm fine, and have gainful employment that looks relatively stable, but you literally can't go anywhere now in most of the populated parts of this city without being swarmed by bums begging for change and cigarettes. They're literally at every store, every intersection, every gas station, every restaurant/fast food place, etc in my area. I almost did a double take when 7 people (not exaggerating, I counted) all asked me for change outside of the same 7-11. They just kept asking one after the other.

The only silver lining I can see is that I jumped places from like top 30-40% to top 10% within the span of a year due to unemployment and the fact that by % I get fucked over way less by inflation than someone making less than $20/hr. But still, that's a super depressing prospect, because I'm definitely not insanely comfortable, I'm just able to easily pay my bills and have some money left over, but it's not like I'm rich.

I primarily work a trade doing work on large industrial jobsites like hydro dams and mines, there were lots of times were american companies are subbed out for the work, or its handled by an american gc and they fly their guys back and forth (gc's will usually have guys like carpenters/machine operators/electricians to do site maintenance and help out where needed). Obviously with covid a lot of these camps are shut down, especially on reserves, but the work gets more and more backed up every day, which means there's going to be a huge surge of demand when it opens up. I also know it's fairly easy to get a work visa here if you have employment already set up.

I live in an agricultural area too - you know why they "couldn't" find workers? It's because they didn't offer a living wage. I've picked fruit before, it's awful. Anyway, I agree the farms don't pay living wages at all. I picked blueberries and strawberries and the pay is shit. But thats why I got work in a greenhouse in the summer, I made a decent wage and didn't have to work as many hours. Me learning to program PLC's helped a lot since thats whats used to automate these things.

But Anon we all enjoy our cheap fruit and veg so thats why we import workers. Its not simply the gov to blame. Our country is expensive and that means if we want to use home grown talent we have to be efficient. It doesnt help that only 9% of Canadian farmers are under the age of 35 and the amount of people in the industry is shrinking every year. I dont have the answers on how to solve the issue tho.
