Hi, I would like to invest my $100k into something, and since it's my first time to ever invest anything, I'm a bit lost. I'm a nonresident alien who worked in the US in the past. I've read Mr Money Mustache's blog as well as watched all the videos attached to the Bogleheads wiki, but all of that alone makes me confused. Like, I understand that if I'm X years old, I want to allocate X% dollars into bonds and (100-X)% into stock. Okay, I know that I should allocate most of stock money into VTI (Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF) and some scrawny portion (like 10%) into VGTSX (Vanguard Total International Stock Index Fund). These are low turnover, low expenses and, I guess, diversified indices. But I swear, I have no clue what to do with bonds... Where and how do I buy them? Do I want to buy a bond fund or a bond ladder? I'm totally confused here. Should I diversify bonds?

And don't even get me started on minimizing taxes: do I want a Roth IRA (tax free) or Traditional IRA (tax defered) account? I already have a regular checking and savings accounts, but I don't have any of those. Theoretically, I should move my bonds over to those tax advantaged accounts, but I have a question: how am I supposed to do that? Bonds (and stocks as well) do not exist, I only receive a digital certificate of ownership or something like that, I cannot put that into my bank account. Are non resident aliens even allowed to get a Roth or Traditional IRA?

Bonds are bundled up loans to companies or governments. Something like VBMFX behaves a lot like VTI or VGTSX do for stocks. Vanguard or any other broker will also allow you to pick individual bonds if that tickles your fancy.

If you're overwhelmed, your best bet for now is probably just going all in on a target date fund. Something like VTTSX will assume you want to retire 40 years from now and adjust its stock/bond mix accordingly (using shit like VTI/VGTSX/VBMFX as components behind the scenes).

For non-resident alien rules when it comes to IRAs, shit, you'd probably want to Google that or talk with your brokerage. Roth v Traditional has also been talked to death all over the internet.

RYCEY - The key thing to remember is the foreign exchange rate. U.K uses GBX for it's stocks. So to get an accurate picture when they say 240p in the articles you need to use a GBX to USD converter.
