in kind contribution refers to giving grayscale BTC; in return the giver gets the corresponding equivalent share of GBTC.
The reasoning is there is a gbtc premium so they give btc, sell the GBTC on the open market, and then use the cash to re-buy BTC at a discount.
the btc given to grayscale can in fact be borrowed on leverage to take advantage of the arbitrage - i don't know how these funny games work but I think volatility is expected any time leverage is involved.

defi, aave etc but you have to put up an equivalent amount of collateral, the more collateral you put the lower your liquidation.
ce-fi - blockfi, celsius, etc. the 2x-4x collateral is probably for traders/hedge funds. plebs have to use 1:1.

you can take out a credit line and buy btc, essentially the same thing.
