I mean, it is realistic, there's a big american community that lives in Thailand. The problem would be healthcare quality which is third world tier pretty much everywhere outside the US and a few Europoor countries.
Another problem is that foreigners cannot own property, In Thailand's case you cannot own land, however you can own apartments.
You also don't know the language which will make it hard to handle legal matters, so you would need the help of someone.

My job in the US has gone remote and I'm seriously considering going back, living like a white god, and saving a lot.

I had a friend who moved to Serbia for awhile because the living expenses there are dirt cheap, and he was working for an American company doing IT from home so he was still making good money.

It's actually an interesting way to save money although the initial expense of moving to a new country might offset that depending on how long you plan on staying.

Well, there used to be. Thailand has been fucking all the foreigners over on visas since March, so a lot of people have been forced to give up their entire lives and go back to their home countries.

Speaking of /trv/, there was a hilarious story about some cellular infrastructure technicians who were hired by Thailand to come out and fix some shit the Thais had fucked up over the summer. They landed and were almost denied entry, then half the Thai officials they ran into tried to fuck them over one way or another to force them to leave. They were finally allowed, barely, to do their work. The funniest part was that their company knew the Thais were going to be a shitshow about it ahead of time, so they had demanded that the entire repair contract be prepaid in full with no refunds possible. So the Thais were literally going to throw away the entire tens-of-thousands-of-dollars of budget already spent just to show how powerful each asshole immigration officer was.

OP, Brazil and Costa Rica and Colombia are probably your best options right now. Argentina is in the middle of a Venezuela-style economic implosion, otherwise it would be pretty good. You could also do central or eastern Europe. Ukraine and Georgia were still accepting incoming travelers last time I looked. Of course, that changes daily every time someone somewhere sneezes.

You absolutely should, it's the best thing I've ever done. I have a comfy American programming job, but have lived in Mexico for past 5 years working remote. Some benefits that no one tells you about:
- Foreign Earned Income Exclusion: Working abroad (even for an American company), means you don't have to pay income tax on $100k of your income. I get paid $150k/year, but only pay taxes on $50k/year (this brings my effective tax rate from like 30% -> 5%). I don't pay Mexican taxes. It's like a free raise.
- Ridiculously cheap human labor. Cleaning lady costs me $15 for a 4 hour clean. Nanny is $25/day for 6 hours. Personal trainer is $30/week. In the US I would need to budget for these things. Here, it's just pocket change.
- Foreigners are automatically interesting. In the US, I'm just another generic guy living an anonymous life. Here, I'm special. All the shopkeepers know me and treat me very well. I get invited to all the cool parties, and everyone wants to be my friend. It's like living life as an attractive woman.
- It's hard to overstate how much money you save. I live like a king, never have a budget, buy everything I want without thinking twice, and still find it difficult to spend more than $1k/month. I easily save >80% of my paycheck (this is after supporting my wife+son).

Downsides:
- Don't see my family/friends as much. I go home enough, but my parents are getting older and I'd really like to see them more while they're in good health.
- Safety. There's always the threat that I could be victim of violence or kidnapping or whatever. But, I live in a gated community, and generally keep a very low profile and never "flaunt my wealth" (rather, I try and look like a hippy). Had my bike stolen once, but have never felt threatened, but it does take a bit more care.

You should try it out. Worst case, you don't like it and can always move back.
