Nice sterling btw, I agree that your items look better polished but it always depends on the piece. 20th century weighted stuff or "plain" items are often better polished but highly detailed/repousse older items look better with patina showing its age and providing depth and contrast. Most LCS dealers are good based people and will help explain/answer questions for a noob. Most like and welcome noobs. I say MOST. LCS clerks are somewhat like gun store employees. Most are nice, some are fuckwads. If you get a jerk, just don't buy there, there's probably more than one LCS in your area if you live in a relatively large city. Don't be surprised or freaked out if they're armed as well.

For first purchase, a government minted coin may be your best bet. American Silver Eagles and Canadian Silver Maples are the most common in North America. Other notable mentions are Britannias, South African Krugerands and Australian Kookaburras and Kangaroos.

Some cons:
Be situationally aware of where you are. If Tyrone is hanging out in the parking lot, nope the fuck out of there. Don't be flashy with your purchase. General common sense stuff. Most dealers will put your coins in a discreet bag.

You need to have a general idea of where the spot price is that day. That one shady dealer might try to put one on you if you reveal you're a nocoins, so at least be aware of what to generally expect for a price by doing some quick online searches beforehand.

Many LCS are not open on Sundays. Cuz Jesus n stuff. Again just be smart and look at the hours/reviews of the shop.

For the person who posted the very long term returns of a stock market index versus gold, that is to be expected and is not a good argument against holding gold at certain periods. In a good economy with reasonably sound money, it is far, far better to hold stocks than gold because gold, as money, does nothing by itself whereas stocks are ownership stakes in companies that are growing revenues and profits.

However, in periods where money is not particularly sound and/or ownership stakes in companies are dear as in a stock market bubble, it is better to avoid buying stocks and hold a less dear asset. Typically, this would be bonds but being that bonds are also dear, the best thing to hold is money. However, fiat currencies today are at risk of severe debauchment so it can be argued that gold, the currency that cannot be debased, is the safest place to hold one's capital.

Now it seems that bitcoin isn't really anonymous never was (it is psuedoanonymous but the transaction history is always public or else it wouldn't work), you can send money anywhere but it takes forever and is expensive if the network is busy or there aren't enough miners to handle the transactions (durin any bull run or panic buying), its horrible as a medium of exchange because it is deflationary (btc always taken out of circulation as keys/wallets are lost so who in their right mind would spend them if the value always goes up?), and unfortunately you cannot be your own bank because or governments will regulate it when it becomes too popular. There was never any doubt that a digital currency could exist albeit all such ideas were founded on centralized control somewhere. For example, a digital currency could be created that does not rely on mining and has one "trusted" party that handled all transactions. But my larger point is that saying it is a deflationary asset is an automatic strike against it is incorrect. In fact gold, in many ways is deflationary relative to the dollar.
