Small business manager here:

Working at a small business means that you might end up wearing a lot of hats. I answer phones, emails, do label printing for fulfillment. I run our social media, do our graphic design, some invoicing, and deal with other day to day tasks. Sometimes I look up at 4pm and wonder where the whole day went.

When I worked in an office, before WFH, we'd all spend at least half the day fucking around and planning what we'd do after we left work. They played on social media on their phones and I'd read slashdot on the work machine because clearly anyone who's reading text on an ugly 00s style website is working and not dicking around.

The other people would then spend hours every day doing things that could easily be scripted, but they didn't know how to do that so they'd just click click click. I got one of those tasks, finished it immediately, and never got assigned another one because the goal of our boss was to make us look busy for their boss. So I was assigned larger projects that were counter productive to our division's mission and I'd write up reports explaining why they couldn't be accomplished so it'd look like I'd tried.

Our boss' boss worked really hard to ADD people to our division because of how busy we all looked. In reality we all should have been fired and the division abolished, nothing of value was ever generated there.

Now I work from home and don't even get assignments anymore. I spend all day either playing vidya or browsing 4chan, sometimes I start WFH gloating threads but really it's just to fill the time.

It's based but now that I'm actually on vacation I'm realizing that my apartment and city are spiritually unfulfilling, especially with all the lockdowns preventing me from lurking in my usual haunts (cafes, libraries, etc). My lease ends in July and I'm thinking about moving somewhere else so that I don't just sit at home on 4chan when I could be outside doing things.

I really don't want WFH to end because I'd have to jump through all the hoops with my new boss that I did with my last one, and I'm just tired of it. They should just pay me for doing nothing, I don't see why they insist I look like I'm doing something when we both know I'm doing nothing.

I dunno what all this other people are on about. I'm an ""engineer"": I sit at the computer and design products on CAD that people will actually use. It's pretty difficult but the end result is quite rewarding. It feels like actual work, it's like when we were kids and built shit with legos.

I’m an investigator for the government of a g7 nation. I spend most of the day scouring for information on the internet or our systems and discussing investigations with colleagues. It’s a pretty cosy job desu, occasionally I stakeout businesses or people, and I interview people which is an art form to master.
