what's happening is the centralized chainlink company subsidizes the limited use of chainlink directly to make up for lack of organic demand from the market
trying to conflate that point with alternate other points might help you rationalize your investment on internet message boards, but if the SEC decides to go after chainlink, it's unlikely to save their ass in court
intent matters != only intent matters. even then, it's going to be hard to explain the weekly 700k dumps if it comes to that. the whitepaper will actually be evidence against sergey if it comes to that, outlining directly the token is meant to be used to dump on investors and subsidize nodes
the only hope for chainlink is to somehow spur real world usage of the platform (= to the point they're not paying for it themselves) before gov decides to go after them
ironically, if chainlink remained a ~#50 by marketcap token the SEC would never ever take notice. but instead the constant shilling by linkmarines may put the spotlight on chainlink before it's able to explain its model convincingly

The clients (long list of Defi projects) pay Chainlink (the contract operator), and Chainlink pays the nodes.

Why?
The problem with Ripple is they were constantly trying to manipulate the price when they "distributed" the tokens, and telling the public that this was their intention.

Sergey is simply using the utility currency described in the white paper to pay nodes, pay wages, fund development, ...
This isn't an issue at all when it comes to being a security or not.
