I sell the borrowed share to some third guy, imaging I'll buy it back cheaper later.
Now I have -1 share, you technically still have 1 share, and third guy also has 1 share. 1 of them is synthetic and the total share count is still just 1 (1+1-1), but there are 2 different people who think they are longing that share.
What went funky with GME more than any other stock anyone can think of, is that people in third guy's position ALSO lent out shares to shorters and this got so out hand that there's more shares and more shorts than should really be able to exist.
