Buying a hardware wallet from someone else is like having someone else generate your private key
No matter what you do to check that the hardware isn't compromised they could probably still do something to it and are incentivized, at least tempted, to do so

It's a little blackbox computer that can lie to you about anything it says it's doing
On the other hand all you need is a computer as simple as a raspberry pi or old laptop that you won't connect to the internet ever again to generate a bunch of private keys + wallet addresses once, write them down, and use them as you want
You don't even have to keep the computer you use to send the coins secure, because you can just empty the wallet and send the remainder to a new cold wallet

Lel, fucking try me m8. There's a good chance they'd get robbed or shot just trying to get into my apartment because of how shitty my neighborhood is. I also have some batshit crazy peurto rican downstairs neighbor who absolutely will stab an intruder. He just sits in the basement hallway stating at the door sharpening a knife (no larp, he did some time last year for pulling a knife on someone on a bus, but got let out because of covid). Then, if you make it through my area (about 6 or 7 people have been killed within a block of me in the last year), past the crazy pissed off peurto rican, and up to my door, I'm going to fucking fill you full of so much buckshot that even if you survive, you'll never be able to walk through a metal detector without setting it off.

Why would I do that when I already generated the wallet? What's the point?
Just another point of failure

>>25025392
>You can format it
And ultimately you have to trust that it's telling the truth when it says it wiped everything
I'll admit it's extremely unlikely that any kind of malware is on a hardware wallet,
but it's like yearly we're hearing about all these security breaches or bugs of some kind surrounding hardware wallets

I can sleep totally soundly at night knowing that there is basically no way anyone can know my keys that I generated on an airgapped computer for less total cost than a hardware wallet
The only credible point of failure in this system is if somehow the software you're using to generate keys is not random and generates from a predetermined set of numbers, in which case you could just flip a coin 256 times if you're really that paranoid and have a wallet software hash the public key in public address for you from that if you want to go full tinfoil hat mode
